I know the 24v was the noisiest Cummins ever. It could be engine noise resonating into the exhaust? I don't know but they are loud. Gotta love it.

Noisy Engine

Love the noise. Especially pulling up to a light in the warmer weather, someone sitting beside me with windows down, they're talking on the phone, few seconds later their window goes up.

No doubt! I love the look people give my truck when it's just ideling along. The 24v rattle combined with the BHAF and straight pipe really grabs their attention. I have to admit, on "occasion" I will put the motor or exhast right at an open window.

Is the truck straight piped or factory muffler?

My 1998.5 rattles more than a friend's 2002, ideling. I have no idea why, although I can hear a valve clicking in the engine noise. I just didn't get around to adjusting the valves.
Adding 2-stroke oil to fuel helped quiet down the engine - the rattle became a little softer.

It is most likely something in the muffler. My '01 has the same thing. If I get under with the motor off and hit the muffler you can hear something loose inside. He should also hear it when starting off if it is a six speed.

Do 2001 have Cats'? Could be a chunk rattling in the Cat.

Piece of carbon or something.

Or better yet, maybe it is a Diamond?

24v don't have cats, just resonators.
