No start please help!
Ok, a friend had his VP44 go out recently. Replaced it with a reman pump, also has only a couple month old Airdog on it too. Truck is a 2000 24v with 89K. Truck will not start after VP44 was replaced unless you give it a sniff of starting fluid. Without it the engine would just crank and crank and crank, if you hit it with a small sniff of starting fluid it it would start up and run just fine. If you turn it off and try to restart it, it wont start. Truck also has a dead Tach too. Keeps sowing that it is throwing the crank position sensor code. would this be his problem? Truck has fuel at the injector line at the head, new IP, and a pretty new airdog.
BTW, the grid heaters are disconnected when we hit it with the shot of ether.

a 2000 could have either the crank position sensor, behind the starter, or the cam position sensor under the VP44 in the gear case.
Being that the tach is dead, and the code suggests the engine position sensor, I would change that sensor, and see what happens.

No fuel leak and no air in the lines
He did do a fuel pressure test and said its good. Truck has a couple month old airdog on it now. I guess the IP died due to an electronic failure
Do not replace any parts with out testing , unless your trying to help out the economy .
Just because there is a code , does not mean that is the problem , it could be that it has a connection issue .

I planned on ruling out if its the sensor or not, checking connections and such. I am a diesel mechanic by profession, all my training is on locomotive engines and not cummins.

Back when my 2000 had about 70 or 80,000 miles the tach sensor went bad. It caused the tach to stop and the oil pressure gage to go to zero. Also would not start. Talked with the dealer as it was still under warranty and they knew of the tach sensor problem. There is actually a recall for that year and they fixed it for free. You might look into that.
