newbie needs help!!!
ok,, i'm a diesel novice so please help me out, i have talked to a couple of guys around about my problem,,my truck is surging bad!
seems like from 35-60mph it will surge in and out of overdrive, it used to just be little surges. not lasting very long and just around 40-45 mph,, now its really getting bad from about 1200-1600 rpm
please help me out i have checked all grounds from the batteries and cleaned off all corrosion and changed fuel filter
i need some help bad,, i just bought the truck thinking it was a better means of transportation because i drive so much
need help ASAP!!!
thanks

I've had the same problem a couple of times. In my case it was cured by resetting the ECU. Unhook the batteries and leave them off for x amout of time. Hook them up and turn key on, don't start engine but push throttle pedal down and release slowly. turn key off, start engine and run.
I've noticed the problem reappear AFTER I've used the trans to slow truck. IE, defeat OD or shift to 2nd gear to slow on a grade. Weird but that's what seems to trigger the misbehaving TC lockup. After reset, all is normal for a while............
I think it's a firmware problem. And!, I don't mean to suggest this is the only problem you may have. Please follow all the suggestions from the learned crew here. I am a newbie....
Beats me!!!

codes
ok i turned the key three times,, heres the codes
P 1693
P ECU
P 0234
P1690
what do all these mean?? with all this nonsense been goin on,,, i've been rackin my brain why i bought a diesel
all help would be apprieciated guys
thanks in advance

1693 tells you you have an error in the ECU
Pecu is the list of ECU failures
p0234 over boost condition possible wastegate stuck open
1690 FP CKP sensor and ECM CKP do not agree (yes your computers are disagreeing with eachother
)
do a search for reasons why type in code on the search boxk here and read...
example 1690:
AC NOISE ACROSS LIFT PUMP
DTC P0336 PRESENT
WIRING AND CONNECTORS
FUEL INJECTION PUMP STATIC TIMING
FUEL SYNC SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
FUEL SYNC SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
Measure the AC noise on the battery voltage going to the ECM.
Is AC voltage above 25mVrms?
Yes ® Replace the lift pump due to excessive AC noise.
Ignition on, engine not running.
With the DRBIIIt, read DTCs.
Is DTC P0336 present?
Yes ® Refer to symptom P0336-CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the ECM harness connector.
Disconnect the VP44 harness connector.
NOTE: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Measure the resistance of the Fuel Sync Signal circuit between the VP44 connector
and the ECM harness connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
Yes ® Go To 7
No ® Repair the open Fuel Sync Signal circuit
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the ECM harness connector.
Disconnect the VP44 harness connector.
NOTE: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Measure the resistance of the Fuel Sync Signal circuit to ground.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
Yes ® Repair the Fuel Sync Signal circuit shorted to ground.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 (DIESEL).
No ® Replace the ECM.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 5 (DI

i think dtt makes a electronic filter to help eliminate the problem not sure if its dtt tho trucks not here to look at but what is is electrical interference from the apps probably

Yeah DTT sells the noise filter for $45. I had this problem and it could be many things. I would check your battery terminals and make sure that your PCM is getting correct voltage. Your PCM controls everything on your tranny. Also you might want to check alternator. I have seen this with not the proper voltage. I have also seen this happen when the TCC+O/D solenoid is bad, either stuck open or closed. I think you should start with the easy stuff first like the VOLTAGE! Good luck and keep us informed!
1693 - companion code, gotta have the codes pulled with a scanner
1690 - fuel injection pump CKP sensor does not agree with ECM CKP sensor
Problem in fuel sync signal. Possible injection pump timing problem. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.
0234 - turbo boost limit exceeded

i'm not sure what the box is, it came with the truck when i bought it,,, and it seems to be doing it with the box on or off
could it be a lift pump??
thinkin of taking it to Forrest Cunningham sometime ,, see what he thinks,, get full set of gauges while i'm at it

ok,, drove it today,,, nuthin,, did not do it,,, at all,,, even tryed to get it to do it drove it for as long as i could at 45
only thing i did was notice that the fuel filter cap was not as tight as it should be.. could it have been sucking air???

heck might just get all four while i'm at it

Just add your trans temp to the steering column...
