i agree w/ the above post, the only "special" tool besides a gear puller are line wrenches if u have them, they help when removing the injection lines from the back of the VP-44, as for timing, that is just lining up the keyway...nothing more than that, you can move the flywheel easily w/ a large screwdriver..other than that, just patience. Read the R&R instructions before you decide and see what u think...good luck!

Re:New VP 44...Looks like I'm paying for it....

I HAVE A VP44 THAT I PURCHASED FROM CUMMINS A YEAR AGO BECAUSE I THOUGHT I NEEDED ONE, BUT I DIDN'T. IT IS A REMANNED ONE, STILL IN THE BOX.I DON'T KNOW IF IT WOULD STILL BE UNDER WARRANTY OR NOT BECAUSE I BOUGHT IT LAST 11-20-02, BUT HAS NEVER BEEN USED. I WOULD MAKE SURE THAT YOUR INJECTION PUMP IS INDEED YOUR PROBLEM. YOU COULD BE FORTUNEATE ENOUGH LIKE I WAS TO FIND THE REAL PROBLEM & FIX IT. I HAVE HAD THIS PUMP I GOT FOR SALE IN THE CLASSIFIEDS, BUT NO BUYERS YET. I JUST KEPT THE PUMP, BECAUSE I HAVE PUT 4 ON MY TRUCK, SO I FIGURED I WOULD NEED IT SOONER OR LATER. HOWEVER, THIS LAST PUMP I INSTALLED HAS BEEN A GOOD ONE. I WOULD SUGGEST LETTING SOMEONE PUT IT IN THAT HAS DONE IT BEFORE. YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE YOUR MATTERS WORSE BY TEARING UP A NEW ONE TRYING TO INSTALL IT. MOST PLACE WILL CHARGE YOU 2 HOURS LABOR TO INSTALL IT, EVEN THOUGH IT ONLY TAKES 20 MINUTES OR SO. IF INTERESTED IN THIS PUMP I HAVE, SEND ME A MESSAGE. IT IS CHRISTMAS, I COULD ALWAYS USE A FEW EXTRA BUCKS, & I WILL SELL IT TO YOU CHEAPER THAN YOU CAN BUY IT FROM CUMMINS. DANNY

also there is no timing to do ,..exept lineup the marks..most anyone can do this job on a level of 1 to 10 i think a 3 should do it..I would pull the front cover like mentioned above..take care of the floating dowl pin lssue, and do the pump at the same time......I would think 3-4 hours if you work real slow,
its all ez to get at and pretty clean compared to a rear wheel seal....YUCCK

Green Machine, contact your local Cummins distributor, he'll get you a better price than Dodge.

P/N 3946135RX (RECON) $1,391 ($1,030 core charge)

Make sure that you check the lift pump also, as they have a bad tendency of going bad and taking out the injection pump.

The best part about buying from your Cummins distributor is that they'll stand behind the product, and they'll be available for advice also, and the internet folks won't be, and may not warranty the product. Best of luck with the repair,

SIA 8)

And yes, I am affiliated with Cummins . . .

Rumor has it that cumminstuff sells vp's for under $850.00. I would call them before going any further.

Been there. Hardest part is getting the gear loose from the pump shaft. I used a universal puller setup and had to crank down until I thought I was gonna break something, and it popped loose. Be careful about tightening the injector end of the lines on reinstall. If you overtighten they will leak.
The www.cumminsstuff.com place has cheap, NEW pumps.

Depends on your skill and comfort level.

As stated, it is really basic R&R. Just some more critical and expensive parts involved. I would have been hesitant, also, but, after having been thru a change, no longer.

Good instruction in the service manual, here, and elsewhere.

Where are you located? Perhaps you can find some nearby assistance, or a good aftermarket shop. Mine would not go to the dealer.

Me thinks someone is confusing the Lift pump and the Injection pump.

I agree w/ Phox.

Lift pump I can see being done quickly but not the VP44.
