New user, no boost!

This is my first post here. I have an '00, 235HP, CTD with the 6-speed. I've only owned this truck for about a month so I'm still getting used to the Cummins. I pulled for the first time with it this weekend and was very dissapointed with it's performance, both in power and economy. I could hear the turbo spool up but I couldn't feel any increase in power. I am used to driving a Powerstroke and thought that maybe I just wasn't used to the power band of the Cummins at first but after the first grade it was obvious something was wrong because my old '96 PSD could run circles around this truck. I never got a check engine light and the truck shows no diagnostic codes. I checked for torn IC boots or loose clamps but didn't find anything obvious. I also inspected the impeller and it looks fine and spins freely. I had a buddy of mine hook the truck up to a scanner that displays real time sensor readings and the manifold pressure reading never got any higher than 4.6 inches of Hg which equates to about 2.3 psi. Where is the boost going? Could the wastegate be stuck open? If it is could a bad MAP sensor cause it and not throw a code? Any help is appreciated.

Check for leaking boots on the intercooler... common problem.
The boots have been known to rub the fenders and rub holes in them.

MAP sensor and IAT Sensors need to be cleaned (try cleaning first) or replaced.

You might take notice to your exhuast... smoke black, white, grey, blue??? Heavy or not???

That will give some more clues...

I checked the intercooler boots, not obvious tears or loose clamps. No noticable smoke to speak of at any time. I did notice some moderate haze in the rearview mirror when pulling a grade with someone behind me at night though. Nothing is noticable during the day though. I'll try cleaning the MAP and IAT sensors tommorow after work to see if it helps anything. Thanks for the help so far.

You might have to check the boots with soap water. To find small holes... Somewhere on the site someone built a device to pressurize the system for checking the boots and intercooler for leaks.

But yea start simple and get to the harder stuff...

After my first haul I'm starting to wonder. My old Ford pulled like a scaulded dog, so far this Dodge is pretty anemic. Hopefully fixing my problem will wake up this Cummins.

Click here for a full list of common part numbers for our trucks.

Up at the top of the web page underneath the DTR main banner is a link for TECH FACTS. Lots of great info on our trucks in there.

I just replaced the MAP sensor tonight, it was like a 5 minute job max. greased the connections with dieclectic before reinstall.

Seems if maybe the truck runs smoother??? I ran 'er hard after the install, I need to check and see if it threw another overboost...... Hope that has fixed it.

Teh old sensor was a little gummed up with carbon and crap, not sure how that gets on it. I'll pull the IAT tommorow and either clean or replace that too. Hopefully it helps.

I got the MAP from Cummins was $86, Dodge wanted $145.
The IAT from Dodge is $45, Cummins wants $80 something......... that's a first for me! Cummins more expensive than Dodge??

cummins is WAY cheaper then dodge, the P#338747 is for the round MAP sensor and P#3417030 is the flat one. you might want to check at reliablegoods.com as they have cummins parts for a great price.
