Is my fuel pump going out?
Is my fuel pump going out?
O.K. Here is a question for you guys. During the last couple of days, my pickup has been lagging a little bit, and when I step down on the go pedal it takes a little bit to respond, I even downshifted and it still took a little bit before it picked up. This is not at all normal for my pickup (normally I have to hang onto the steering wheel when I get onto it). Did I get some bad fuel the last couple of tanks, or does it sound like my fuel pump is going out? Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a fuel pressure gauge installed yet. Give me your best guess. I have to take this to Colorado from Ohio in the next week and don't really want to get stuck beside the road. I can take the wife's broom and put it in the back for emergencies I guess....
Turn the key on, off, on, off, and on again. It should show any trouble codes on the odometer if it has codes. This is assuming you have a 98.5 truck with a vp-44 injection pump. You can try the fuel fuel filter, but you are describing a dead pedal condition. This is associated with either a APPs or the injection pump.
I hope for you it is the APPs. If you dig, you can find the procedure to reset it, but I really think it is you injection pump. If it is you IP, I would bet your lift pump is bad also.
You really need to get the fuel pressure checked out and run the codes. If your truck has a vp, but does not do the code trick, I think autozone will pull codes for free.
Hope this works... and if your truck does not have a vp-44, then my info is not valid.

I think you have a fitting on the top of your oil filter that you can screw a cheap pressure guage into. If you do get it done immediately. I believe any mechanical pressure guage will work short term and the fittings can be had at any auto parts store or Home Depot for that matter. Good Luck
Yes. I have a 98.5, 24 valve. How do I tell if I have a VP-44 in my truck? I will take it to Autozone to see about the codes. Will that tell me if I have a bad IP? What is an APPs? I just replaced the LP before I left California (the dealership told me I needed it replaced because it was leaking, I think it was just a loose bolt...my bad for not understanding what was going on!).
Thanks again,
Rick
