My buddy needs help!
My buddy just called me tonight and he has a bit of a problem. Hes replacing the lift pump on a 01 for a guy, and he already bought the one that mounts on the block. When he called me, he said that it has an aluminum block mounted in the spot on the block and wanted to know what that was. I said that sounds to me like it had the pump replaced under warranty before and has the new intank style lift pump. I said I think his only options are, get a drawstraw for the tank, and then the guy is only gonna be able to run it down to a quarter tank before refueling and mount the new pump he got either on the engine or along the frame (which the guy doesn't wanna spend the money to do). I said his other option was to mount the lift pump in the factory location and try and find a old style fuel tank module for it. Am I right on all of this? Anyone have a used module they would be willing to sell?
Sounds like it has the intank pump.
BTW, the Draw Straw will allow all the fuel in the tank to be used. IF you can't, it's not installed correctly.
Recently, a fellow truck owner made the same quarter tank claim. I told him to bring it by the house and I would fix it. Armed with a new tube, he asked, "What's that for?" I explained that he cut his tube to short and he went on a tirade about how he followed the instructions to the letter.
Well, long story short, the tube was cut well short of what it should have been. Installed correctly, it works as well as the stock system.
BTW, I fixed the quarter tank issue.
So, Draw Straw and a good replacement pump system of his choice.

My buddy, whom I also work with, is probably the best diesel tech we have in our shop. He checked fuel pressure at the injection pump inlet and had 8psi at idle and 0psi at WOT. The biggest problem with the truck is that the injection pump is going out, coughs and sputters and smokes white at idle or if you give it any throttle. Once warmed up, its not as bad, but its still not right. It has the PO216 code for the fuel timing. BUT, the owner talked to a "diesel mechanic" at a local used truck dealer and he instists that the inj. pumps never go out on these things
Funny, I've had mine go out, and my buddy and me have down 2 others already, not to mention the 2 we've bad ones we've had at the shop. So hes just gonna do the lift pump for now, and hopefully the owner of it will realize that that other "mechanic" was full of crap.
