maybe answer a question for a newbe?

i have a 99 2500 cummins with the banks powerpack, sun coast tranny, and pro-lock single disc tq. converter. dont know much at all about diesel's or these trucks in general.
I have done alot of searching and cant seem to find anything like my situation.

i was getting on the highway the other night and truck was going through gears like normal, no gauges were high, everthing was running correct temps, and then just one loud pop. Sounded like the transfer case poping into neutral, acted like it too motor just reved wouldnt go anywhere.
Well truck will roll with it in park, mechanic just called this afternoon and said that the droped the pan and said there was no shavings in the pan at all, and would be checking the overdrive unit and transfer case tomorrow.

i dont want anyone to go out of there way because i will know soon enough what happed, but i was just wondering if anyone has heard of this happening and might no right off what is wrong.

thanks in advance
Dustin

I'd put money on the transfer case being bad...

I'd put money on an input or output shaft.

Escapes me at the moment which tends to go first on auto trannies, but it's one of them.

I'd recommend replacing it with billet, obviously you have too much power for the stock shaft.

Broken flex plate? Seen it once or twice on these, over the years.

ok guys i still havent heard from the machanic, so lets pick at the brains alittle more. the truck moves when it is in park, 4wd doesnt work so i know its not the drive shaft.

but if the park doesnt lock the wheels shouldnt it be something output shaft-transfer case? i mean the truck starts and idles fine, but when you pull it down into gear it doesnt do ANYTHING you cant fell any difference of hear any difference in the idle.

and you can go from reverse to drive and back and forth without any grinding, i figured if the tranny is spining in reverse and the output shaft was broke (which means it wouldnt go anywhere like its doing) and you pulled it down into drive then the tranny would at least make alittle grinding noise from the motion of the tranny changing so fast without the driveline stoping the transmission before u shift.

recap:
if it was the flex plate or input shaft i would think the transmission would still hold the truck in park

but if its a output shaft i would think that the transmission would grind when you change from reverse to drive

please correct me cause im not sure
Thank you guys for helping

Yeah, that makes sense, if it was a flex plate, park would still hold the truck. Seems right what you say about grinding into gear. I'm kinda at a loss here too.

I would think there would be a horrible noise as the flex plate came apart.

Output shaft would be just like popping a u-joint in the rear axle, you've lost the connection to the wheels, thus it won't keep the truck from rolling.

Broken chain in the transfer case would also act like a popped u-joint, in that it wouldn't hold the truck.

Either way, the transfer case need's to be dropped, once it's dropped you'd be able to tell what grenaded.

well i striped the splines off of the input shaft, sorry for leaving you guys hanging for a while, i was in west virginia riding fourwheelers.

i still dont see how the input shaft broke would not hold the truck in park.

but new shaft is in and truck is up and running.

i just had to keep telling my self "doo doo happens" <----sorry if this is a curse free site
