Many questions...I'm a Greenhorn...please help!

Please help…I am a greenhorn & I just purchased a 98 2500 24v 4X4 Auto Quad Cab Long bed with 3.55 gears & ~80K miles. I would like to get the best possible mileage – without breaking my bank account. I believe I am only getting ~ 15 miles per gallon (light driving – not towing) and I am located in San Jose, California.

I have the following questions:

1.What is the best Air Filter/ System to run? – Where should I buy one?
2.I would like to buy pillar gauges, who has the best gauges at a reasonable price?
3.Who sells a lift pump gauge?
4.I would like to update the exhaust system and get rid of the cat – who has the best exhaust system for the money? Is the 14-gauge system worth the money? Or should I simply go with replacing the cat with a straight pipe (dealer)?
5.Should I replace the IAT & Map sensors? If so…suggestions on where to purchase them?
6.Should I replace the Injectors?

Last one (for now) please recommend a competent mechanic who can diagnosis the computer settings for better mileage?

Any suggestions, comments, answers, places to purchase these items at a reasonable price would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin
Is this opening a can of worms, or what !

First off, welcome Greenhorn. I'm sure you can find all of the info that you need right here. I'll give you my opinions, but be assured that you will find many to counter. I would suggest doing some searching and reading as there is quite a lot of previous discussion, much of it in some depth, with respect to all of your questions.

Your mileage is well within reason for "around town light driving". You should see more on the hiway, and perhaps less on real short trips, or towing locally.

I'm going to AFE Mega Cannon. I like oiled element air filters. K&N would be fine also, but I like the AFE setup. There are those who don't. I'm sure someone can offer an option for a paper element filter assy.

I prefer Autometer gauges. There are many available, and many different preferences.

Your fuel pressure gauge will keep you informed as to your lift pump's performance, or lack therof. On your truck it is very simple to read both before and after the fuel filter.

Exhaust - Rip Rook is your man. Info on him is available on search here, or (503) 654-9004. 'Nuf said.

I'm not sure that you have a sensor problem, or any problem from the info so far.

Injectors, yes, absolutely. Start with Super Mentals, and it's all over after that! 8) Kiddin, actually.

I'm not sure that you have any real mileage issues. I would suggest that you get in touch with some other members who are close to you, and start talking it up. Look, touch, test. Check out some modified rigs, and then figure out where you want to be w/ yours. Make a plan, and pursue it step by step until you decide that you need a new plan. Bigger, better, faster.

Good Luck, I'm sure that you'll get it all figured out!
Welcome Greenhorn,
Big K answered most of your questions. Mileage sounds about right, I'm getting around that w/4:10's and some mods. Mileage on mine should go up a little when summer fuel/temps come. It seems like most 24v's don't get quite the mileage that the 12v's do. I have and like Isspro guages, with the green bulb covers they are a pretty good match to stock. Also I may be wrong about this, but I think you will find your "cat" is a resonator. I don't think any of the 24v's have cats. I have a 4" DTT exhaust. It doesn't attract attention under normal driving, but has a nice bark when I get on it. I don't think it adds significant power or mileage, but it sounds sweet.
Good luck,
Tim

1. I can't say what's BEST, but I'm looking pretty hard at a Scotty II.
2. I like my Autometer Ultralite gauges, but they weren't cheap. Pics here: http://www.Stamey.nu/Truck
3. My FP gauge is a mechanical Autometer Ultralite.
4. If you have a 24v that's not a cat, it's a resonator.
5. While they aren't too expensive, if you haven't determined they are bad, why replace them? They are only available from the dealer as far as I know.
6. Replacing the injectors can lead to more HP and better fuel mileage, but it depends on the weight your foot. ;D

I'm in Va. so I can't comment on Diesl mechanics in Cali.
My suggestion: If you do nothing else, get the fuel pressure gauge.

Chris

Re:Many questions...I'm a Greenhorn...please help!

Welcome, the in town mileage doesn't sound bad, as for the other questions there are several options and reasons for them. I offer my choices with some explanations.
1. BHAF, I don't trust myself not to over oil a reuseable filter, otherwise it would be a Scotty II.
2&3. I am using Autometer Z series Boost and Pyro with a Westach 0-30psi Fuel pres guage, I got them at Geno's, I was able to get all three from one source to save on shipping costs, Wildcat is also a good source to check.
4. I removed the Cat/Resonator and muffler and replaced with a piece of 3" pipe, 62" long with a 3 " offset bend in the middle, had the local Midas bend the pipe and I installed it my self.
5. If everything appears to be working correctly I would save the money for the Guages and exhaust and other goodies.
6. I have replaced the Injectors and added an Edge Comp, I currently have a heavy foot, I am enjoying the extra power, I have not seen a major difference in milage with them. I am hoping that this summer when we return to regular fuel, non winter blend, and I am more used to the upgrades that my foot lightens up a bit and the mileage improves.

As for the mechanic I can't help much.

Re:Many questions...I'm a Greenhorn...please help!

As has been stated many, many times on this board---- if you start making lots of power, and you can't control your right foot, you will need some tranny upgrades....
