LP replacement
LP replacement
I have 83,000 miles on my truck with the original LP.13-14 psi at idle 9-10psi at hwy speeds.I'm leaving in 2 weeks for at trip to FLA.(13 hr. trip) As a precaution should i change the LP? The Haynes manual says i have to drop the starter to do it, is there another way of doing it? Any answers are appreciated.
I do mine from the top by moving the filter canister out of the way.
I'd change it now and keep the old one as an emergency spare.
It's easier to do in the driveway in the daylight with the right tools, than on the side of the road at midnight in the rain with a leatherman, and a rusty screwdriver.
The Cummins factory pump can be had for ~$140 online.
The Dodge dealer wants ~$300+ for the exact same pump.

My Cummins lift pumps live an average of ~48,000 miles.
I will NOT tolerate anything under 10 psi at any time on my truck.

For piece of mind i would at least buy one to have and the tools to install it. There are to many reports of duds right out of the box or short lived. Watching your pressures and how the pump comes up to pressure along with abnormal noises are key to catching it before it fails at an inopertune time. Mine has 68,000 and works the same since i installed the gauges 35,000 miles ago. If it were me i would run it till it fails.
I replaced my LP on Monday in few hours doing it from the top. I took off the Intake casting on the (Intake) heater and the fuel filter housing. Fairly simple but could probably be done without removing so much with a few acrobatic moves.
