low fuel pressure
low fuel pressure
My Edge Juice informed me today that I had low fuel pressure. 3 psi at idle and 1-2 while drving. Sure glad I installed the Edge Juice but I have no idea what to do now. I know the low fuel pressure could mean I have a lift pump going out but I don't even know how to get to that or exactly where it is. I looked under the truck but saw nothing like a pump anywhere around the fuel tank. Or maybe I need to check other things first. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks all.
Is it save to drive the truck with that low of a pressure. The nearest mechanic is 30 miles away. If I decide to replace the pump myself, how tough of a job is it? Sounds like I need to remove the gas tank, and then I assume there is an inspection plate or something to get access to this pump, correct. Man, those pumps are not cheap. I checked with the nearest Kragen and they are $162. Would it difinitely be the lift pump or could it be something else I should check first. Thanks
Look at this diagram.
Your Lift Pump (Transfer Pump) should be located on the engine block (Component Number 1)

Replacement cost varies from ~$70 at some Cummins parts counters (Campaign Lift Pump), to ~$159 at others, to $300-400 at the Dodge Dealers.
And takes about an hour to change (for someone who hasn't done one before)
Remember to pick up new sealing washers while you're at the parts counter.

Try the CNW in souther Oregon. I got my last campaign pump for $54 shipped from Western Wa to me here in south Central Wa. and I'm sure you could have them send you one in Cali for next to nothing. Though they might have screwed up when they charged me because I havent seen one listed for that cheap since; especially shipped.
Well, I learned some more info today. The Dodge dealer says that the engine mounted pump is no longer sold. They now sell a kit for $600 to put a lift pump in the tank. It appears that I have the pump installed on the engine as the diaphram shows in the emails above. Now can I get a recommendation on where I could get one for a better price than that.

I just replaced mine this past wknd. I got one from Advance Auto. Overpriced, but I was out of options. It's a Carter pump, and comes w/ the new washers in the box. Mine was mounted on the motor, basically right underneath the fuel filter housing. It makes it a lot easier if you remove the 2 bolts that hold the housing on and you can kind of swing it out of the way. It's a pain if you have big hands, trying to work in that tight spot, but it's doable.
PM B4Wheeler, he lives near a Cummins shop and got 2 last week for $68, each they even came with a low pressure switch. I'm sure he would pick up some for you and just charge you the shipping. We put on the Vulcan LP relocation kit. Don't let Dodge put the intank Junk on your truck!!!!
It's MUCH easier to replace the standard location pump than the new "improved" in-tank pump if there is a problem in the future.
You can also relocate the standard pump back nearer the tank on the frame rail as several have done.
Just for the record, mine is still in the stock location.
.....Then there's the FASS and Walbro guys.....be patent, they'll be chiming in pretty soon.
