Lost Fifth(5th) Gear today

So I lost Fifth Gear today, Had to drive 300+ miles in 4th gear, fun day after sticking in the truck for 6.5 hr yesterday driving through snowy roads.

My question is follows, I have the Dealer fix nut kit, I don't haul heavy or even drive the truck that much. I think it will do, but where can I get the nut socket from for the best price.

Any other tips I should know, I read the TSB.

Probably Harbor Freight or a place like it.

Get one at Home Depot, use it, clean it and return it. Don't feel too bad, they knocked out the old time lumber yards, serves 'em right!

Some guys have taken the socket for doing the hubs on 4wd front ends and modified it to fit over the nut, and made it like a crowfoot socket.

I was wondering about that. You confirmed my thoughts.

My friend used to be a half partner in Cougar boats. He had a 2006 1 ton dually 5speed that did the same while returnin from California. They droe a long way in 4th. This was the second time so Wayne welded the nut in place and it never happened again.

Well I like the idea of welding, I'm sure it will affect the heat treatment of the shaft, I would much rather have the nut back off and burn a bunch of fuel then to have the shaft snap and be dead.

Do you know what 4x4 socket that was? from what I gather the stubbys have to be 60mm apart(measure the nut sitting here with me)

Also how is everyone holding the main shaft when retightening the nut, if I have the trans in first is there enough holding power from the engine or do I need the 80 dollar splined socket?

Just a spanner nut, you could borrow a spanner wrench, if you have a place that can waterjet, I can send you a file of the one I drew up and had made out of S7 tool steel....

I believe the nu8t calls for 300 Lb/Ft torque, so I doubt the front axle socket would deliver.

@patdaly,
Can you please send me a copy of that file? I work at a fab shop with a laser and would like to make that tool for the next time mine comes apart. If you have any of the other oddballs I'd be happy to make them as well.

I work for a place that has lots of lasers and Plasma cutters, unfortunately I don't think they would let me cut personal stuff(I work Case New Holland)

IIRC, the lock nut on my front hubs is somewhere around 220 ft-lbs. 300 isn't that far away.

I wish I thought of that when I made my socket. I used what I had kicking around...some 1/4" square stock (keys), a 1 1/2" threaded floor flange, and a welder. Clamped the keys in the grooves, then ground down the lip of the flange so they fit, then welded them to the flange. Then bolted some angle iron to the flange, and letter rip! Quad4x4 had the actual wrench for fairly cheap, looked alot like the one posted above.

As far as holding the shaft when tightening, the motor won't do it. So you either need to hold the motor or pop the shifter and stick it in 1st and 3rd gear at the same time.
