Loss of power w/high coolant temp

Gents,

Last weekend I towed my trailer from Phoenix to Flagstaff on I-17. My truck seemed to loose most of it's power, so much so that I had to manually downshift my trans to 2nd then to 1st and I could only make about 15-20 mph. I had previously noticed my coolant temp was maybe 220-230 and I slowed down to around 45 mph in 3rd. Suddenly, power was restored and it seemed like it was related to the coolant temperature. The loss of power was so pronounced it was almost like I had a dead accelerator pedal. No codes set and no check engine light. Any ideas on what this may have been? Thanks for any ideas.

I pulled a load of hay this weekend and experienced the same problem. When I figure it out I'll post. Maybe someone will give some ideas.

There is a engine defuel at approx 226 degrees. It is to reduce the chance of engine damage at high temp.. Ecm is likely thinking a fan belt or hose blew. I believe it should have thrown a code 217 if I remember correctly.
