Loss of power, cutting out.

I am new to Dodges so go easy on me here. I can tell you everything there is to know about Powerstrokes but the 24 valve Cummin's is a learning curve for me. Tonight as I was coming home it seemed to lose power off and on and it cut out for just a second a couple of times. I backed way off the throttle and had no problems. This truck has 120,000 on it with the original lift pump. I know the pumps are a problem, the PO told me he had no problems at all with it. He was not aware of the pump issues and Dodge never told him. I am wondering if this sounds like a pump or maybe just a clogged filter. I am fully planning on a FASS 02 pump but don't have the money right now. Any thoughts? BTW, no check engine light, haven't scanned for codes. Will do that this weekend.

you need to post what yr truck you have(fill out your signature in UserCP)
different yr trucks are capable of displaying codes in the Odometer.
what you describe is "dead pedal" do a search for this and you will find more than you can read..

And it could be as simple as a apps reset. Procedures are here on the site.

Sorry Nick, 14 hour day and aggravated. Sig should be there now. 1998 24v ram 3500 dually 2 WD.
I just bought this truck and was told a lot of stuff had been done that in fact had not been done. I have already put another thousand bucks in it over the buying price. If the VP44 is bad who do you guys recommend for a replacement? I am a retired master mechanic so engines are nothing new to me but being retired and also having a very bad back I am limited to what I can do.

I would go have the codes checked @ autozone and report back. Could be Apps or vp-44. The fuel system is the weak link. You will need a fuel pressure gauge if there isn't one already. Relocate the lift pump to the frame rail, upgrade the lift pump, big line kit (tank to ip).

If it's the oem lp I will bet the lp and the ip is toast. IMO, I would go with the raptor 100. It's smaller and cheaper but just as reliable.

I think I'd do the APPS reset first, since that's easy and doesn't require buying parts or doing any wrenching, except for disconnecting the batteries.

Also check for any codes. I'm not sure if the 98 24 valve trucks can do the key on, key off trick, but it's worth a try. To do this, with the truck off turn the key on, but don't crank the engine, then off, then on, then off, then on again. If it works you'll see "Pdone" flash on the odometer if there are no codes set. If there are codes set, it will flash them on the odometer and end with "Pdone".

Unfortunately it is still possible that you could have a problem with the injection pump and not have any codes set. I think it's much more likely to set a couple codes though if it is failing.

OK, I just put my Snap-On scanner on it and I have no codes in engine body or transmission. I was told the fuel filter had been changed recently but then again I was also told the front brakes were done and they are toast! I am going to get a new filter and see what the old one looks like. I am definitely going to put a lift pump on it. I see a Raptor 100 mentioned, where would I get one? Does it mount using the factory lines and plugs?

OK, Did a little searching and found the Raptor is an Airdog and id over 100.00 more than a FASS-02 pump. They are both gearrotor pumps so I don't see why I would need to spend the extra 100.00 for a stock vehicle. Am I missing something here?

You should remove the stock fuel lines and fittings they are very restrictive. No need to buy a fuel pump with filters attached, the stock set up is good.

So you have no codes. I would do the apps recalibration.

Alright, FROZEN HANDS!!!! Changed the filter and got it started, what a pain. Put a gauge on the filter housing, changed gauge, I have maybe one or two pounds at idle. If I rev it I drop to zero. I believe I have found my problem.

You should move the fuel pump to the frame rail in front of the fuel tank, the raptor kit comes with the necessary stuff to do that ie. the extra $.

Sorry I have never been a fass fan. I'm just giving you my input on what to do to get long reliable life from your truck.

yep, fuel pressure that low will cause issues for sure, not all is lost because if the VP was wore out you would be getting a 0216 code.
My truck orginally had a failed LP and it was driven like this for who knows how long, I did replace it because my truck was my income, but at the time of replacement there was nothing wrong with it, knowing what I know now I should have left it on there till it failed

First and foremost, thanks for the replies and suggestions. It seems to be fixed. I had checked for codes with my Snap-On scanner and found none for engine, body or transmission. Next I changed out the filter because I just got this truck and it was an unknown. Next I put a pressure gauge on the filter and Bingo, 1 pound. since I did not have the money or time to wait for a Raptor I went to NAPA and picked up a part number P74213 pump. It is made by Federal Mogul in the USA and has a 1 year warranty. Put it in and have 15 lbs. at idle and 8 at WOT. That will get me by until I have saved the funds for the Raptor. Looks like I dodged a bullet on the IP failing.

You got lucky this time but the damage may be done to the ip, start saving for it too. Watch the pressure from that pump they are not very reliable in the stock mounting position.

Back in 2001 I got stranded when the ip went out with no cel or codes. Shortly after I found this cool place. The first 1/2 year 24 valves are pretty reliable once the oem fuel system is dealt with and you get lucky and have no cracks from the #53 casted block.

Another minor issue is the head gasket leak @ the right front corner of the engine just below the thermostat. The head gasket is faulty and antifreeze will weep out and not in to the cylinder. Mine leaked for several years before I fixed it.
