Looking for Ideas for auto tranny fix or replace??
A friend called me yesterday and says his auto tranny is blown in his 01, i have no experience in autos, just manuals, so i told him i'd get on here and see what ppl are doing for this problem. He called around and come up with
3-4000 to repairs his. He doesnt have any go fast stuff on it, does not do any heavy towing, so he's not looking for something that will take 800hp and 2000 ftlbs!! What little i've paid attention to the autos isnt there some compaines out there offer full trannies and converters for around that same price? I don't know thats why i'm askin you guys! i was told along time ago don't buy a dodge diesel with an auto!! i guess this is why?? thanks for any info....

He got 8 yrs form it! I've seen clutches go out in less time.
My experience with DTT installers is that they work with the customers needs. They can do from full factory rebuild to full blown custom DTT.... and anything inbetween.
With your friends stock CTD, I would expect he could get a factory rebuild, with a DTT valve body and an slightly upgraded tq. converter and have a strong tranny that he would love.... in the under $4,000 range.
Just the DTT valve body, with all else stock, would be a big plus.
He'll love it because it will get more power to the ground while lasting longer than the original!
I suspect any of the big 3-4 (DTT, Georand, HTS) could do the same for him. I'd go with whoever had an active installer closest to him!

You really need to tear down the "broke" trans and evaluate what hard parts you need. I overhauled my spare 47re and had about $1400 in it by the time I was done. Light mods, only wanted towing power. Dave Goerend gave me lots of good tips on the build and I did buy my converter and valve body kit from him. Used a factory OH kit as they use Borg Warner steels/clutches and those are plenty good for what I do. I also "freshened" my original trans and did the valve body in it also. Been sitting on the shelf for four years now.
