lift pump in cold weather
Well I sneaked out late last night and switched the gage to the inlet side of the filter. 13-14 psi at -5 deg no chatter. rechecked the outlet side 2-4 psi. chatter like crazy. What the.?? I think the filter is plugged up but it only has 4000 miles and it is a Wix. Well I had to go to work today. It was cold in the morning but by noon it had got up to about +15. I had 15 psi when I turned the key then after starting it went to about 8. Went out for lunch and came back and it's up to about 9psi.
Then tonight at 4:30 it's about 18 deg and the psi is 10-11 after starting. It dropped a couple but then in about 20 minutes it was back over 11 again. I just got back from AZ checking the price on filters....30 bucks plus tax. Forget that. I think I can get 2 from Geno's for that and shipping. Pluss they are Wix or Fleetgard. It's supposed to warm up for the weekend so tomorrow I order from Geno's and a Vulcan line kit for the new LP.
I'm thinking That the fuel was very near the gel point. I use a load of PS about 12 oz per 20 gal or less so maybe with the new B-2 or B-5 what ever is in the tanks now may have something to do with it. Last year it got down to -20 for several days and I didn't have a bit of trouble. The Bio may be loosening up the crud in the tank too. Hope not. We have only had pump Bio for a couple months now and it isn't much. They did have some trouble at the Bio plant a couple months ago so maybe I got a bad load but it was from a busy station so I don't know.
By the way I have brand new batteries and they work great. With 15-40 at -10 they hardly slow down. No plug in available...just cycle the grid heaters twice and hit the key. zzaarroomm...smoke city
Not only cover the whole parking lot but wake everybody up at 5:00 am.
Eric at Vulcan is a great guy. They have the stuff.

The vulcan stuff is SWEET!! The fuel line looks like a garden hose sitting there. Eric is way beyond top-notch to deal with!!
How old are your batteries? That may contribute to your cranking problems. My truck always pops right off when plugged in, but even at 20 degrees or so not plugged in, there is a huge difference. The cranking is labored. Since my truck isn't garaged all year long, I only give batteries a 2 year "useful" life span. Meaning, if it's 10 degrees out, not plugged in, truck still cranks real well. Cold weather is brutal on batteries.

Also what FP are you getting? I think I need the 150gph because I plan on injectors soon.
Also I believe its my pump that is giving me the hard start problem. (see my Hard to start post) So I may be getting a FASS II pump for Christmas and maybe some injectors.....
Ok so now in reading some of the other posts the fuel heater comes up.
When I changed the fuel filter, the connector for the water-in-fuel sensor ? was or seemd to have been disconnected. It may have unhooked itself or I accidentally pulled it off myself. It was dark and I didn't have a lot of light. When everythiing was back together I made sure this connecter was hooked up solid. Is there another wire of connector on the fuel canister?? I don't remember seeing any except this one.
If not where is the fuel heater??? sorry for the dumb question.
Is there an aftermarker fuel heater available??
I'm going to replace the fuel filter this week end if I can get a good one. The only one I can find locally is at AZ and is obviously made in some CO I can't even recognize the language.
Merry Christmas and yes the plane will fly
