lift pump

what happens when a lift pump goes bad? My truck was running today i think poorly it didnt have much power at all. when i was idling it started to sputter and eventually stalled out. when i started it again it ran for a while then sputtered again. After that i can't get it to start it just turns over fast like it does when you are trying to start it after the fuel filter canister has been emptied. i also notice that after i try to start it something under the hood runs like an electric buzz sound for quite a while. but the truck wont start regardless of how many times i let it sit there and i gues try to prime it self. what can be causing this problem? the truck is a good distance from any garage so i need to get it fixed on site if i can do it myself.

i also think that the cruise control was acting up it seemed like i had to hold the accel button for a long time before it would maintain any speed.

You need to put a fuel gauge on your truck to monitor the fuel pressure, but I'm pretty sure from the way you described the situation you may have fried your injection pump by lack of fuel pressure.

Fill out your signature so we know what truck you have, mods, miles, ect.

If it runs take it to a parts store and have them pull codes. If you have an 0216 your IP is fried. I would replace both the LP & IP and intall a fuel pressure gauge.

Sounds like the injection pump took a dump. You need to put a fuel pressure gauge on it to make sure it is not just the lift pump though. Any codes? Does the lift pump run when the starter is bumped, and flow fuel? If it does not jog the lift pump then the vp44 more than likely took a dump.

trex, I think your vp44 is dead. You need to pull the codes. let us know.

The vp44 is your injection pump. If you hear something running after you bump the starter your lift pump "seems" to be operating. The only way to know is to install a fuel pressure gauge to see if it is operating properly. More than likely your injection pump is toast. The same thing just happened to me with no warning, just died, fuel pressure good also. Yes a code reader from any of the auto parts stores will work to retrieve any codes. Is your engine light on?

IMHO Since it won't start you might want to consider having a diesel shop do the work. You have so many things going on all at once you might save some money and time by having an expert diagnois the problems before you start throwing money and parts at it.

Here is a link to how to change the VP-44. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you are handy with a wrench its a 4-5 hour job and $1,600, LP is $160, and the fuel pressure gauge set up is around $100.

Sorry man. The fuel pressure guage is the most important thing to get when you get it running to avoid this in the future. Do a search about fuel pressure and the VP-44. Hours of reading and you will be an expert too.

Ok... Guys is there a chance that there is a fuel line leak or pick up problem in the tank?

From what he saying the LP is buzzing so it might be working but fuel sender problem (empty tank), Sucking air in the fuel line, etc...

But everyone is right you NEED a fuel pressure guage! The most important guage to get!

i spent a while yesterday with the truck. my buddy put his obdII and it had a code i cant remember off the top of my head i think it was 1688, we couldnt find anything that told us what that meant though. i will put a gauge on it today and see what its reading. where should i connect it to pre or post and what kinda connection will i need to find. the only thing that is close is an advance auto would they have the connections or shold i try another way? i let the canister drain out and then bumped the starter and fuel came out so ithink the lp is working just dont know how good. anything i can se to test the vp44? any other after market parts that i can use other than the vp44. thanks for all the help,
