Let's Get A "Tune Up List"

this summer i'm gonna tune up my pickup since i'm creeping up on 100,000 miles, i know that's a good time and all. so i thought we could gather a nice list of all the things that should be done at tune up time...here's what i can come up with for now...

adjust valves (how do you guys turn the engine)
change oil
flush coolant
grease all fittings
clean battery terminals
replace serpintine belt (mine needs it)
check tire pressure
replace differential fluid (what do you recommend)
wash
wax

that's all i got for now, umm, what about wheel bearings, can ours be repacked or not?...

To bar the engine over, get a ratchet and socket on the alternator pulley, and turn it. It will only turn in one direction, the belt will slip in the other.

Front wheel bearings are replace only, and rear bearings are lubed by diff oil.

ok, i heard of that put i thought it sounded kinda silly to turn the whole engine with the alternator pulley

and i figured that about the wheel bearings...just had to make sure.

Change tranny filter and top it off.
Check transfer case fluid.
Grease the slip yokes in the front and rear drive shaft.

Oh and check your headlight fluid, and make shure the muffler bearing is still in spec.

Thats all i can add to your list.

"check your headlight fluid" Classic!...the irony is I once had a car where the headlights did fill magically with water! I would have to check the level. I finally drilled a weep hole at the bottom of the lamp and fixed the problem...never could find the crack though.

Why not replace belt if not done already, easier in driveway than on highway, while belt is off:
Fan and clutch
Pulleys
Water pump bearing
Alt bearing
Toss in a new T-stat.. maybe
Service batts if not maint free
Ohh, yeah, two ends on each batt cable..
Get an inspection mirror ( I preffer the extendable handled round one from blue point) and check for:
Leaking water pump
" P/S pump
Cracked manifold
cracked block (53's)
And last but not least, are those hoses gonna hold out through the summer?

See above + Change all gear box fluids, flush/replace old nasty brake & clutch fluid, straighten droopy mustache looking front bumper, replace worn squeeky door bushings, finish guage install (box in shop) before vp44 is trashed, decide/spend $$ on fuel system & steering. Pull boat to lake. Go sailing. Drink beer.
