A laughable driving question

So ive been reading alot and ive been told both ways but im curious about this. When your all driving and your empty do you start in 1st or 2nd. Because i know the truck can start in 2nd if you slip it just alittle.

Alright hears the question what is going to be better for my truck 1st all the time or does it not matter since there is very little slip to 2nd? How much life will it take out of the clutch.

Basically some one inform me how the hell i should be driving it, all the other manuals ive driven you have to start in 1st type thing.

Thanks rob

I don't have a 6 speed but a buddy does and when i drive it i go 2,4-6. Skipped all the odd gears. Less shifting.

I typically go 1,2, and then start skippen depending on what im doing. I think now that ive thought about it more is starting in 2nd all the time (when empty and flat) going to burn up my clutch faster? There we go a much more answerable question.

THanks guys and gales

Over the last six years Ive owned two 2001 HO six speeds. The only time I have ever taken off in First Gear is when towing. As far as slipping the clutch in 2nd, you shouldnt have to slip anything. Throw it in 2nd...and go

Dont worry about it, I didnt smoke my first clutch untill I threw a comp and big sticks in it. Then I went to a dual disk...

If you keep your truck the way it is, you will get quite a bit of life out of your stock clutch. 2nd gear, the only way to take off...

I would always start in 1st, but skip second if not loaded. Getting the truck moving makes the most slipping, heat, and clutch wear. JMHO.

Keep in mind, hes running a 6 speed. If he starts in first and skips second, he will definetly by slipping the clutch. I still say, nothing wrong with 2nd gear starts, 1st is overkill, pointless...unless towing

I'll have to agree here. Especially since I have driven Tom's truck with the dual disc in it. I don't think 1st gear even garners 10mph. It is truly a creeper gear and only there to get a very, very, heavy load started. 2nd gear is just fine to start in when empty.

I have an 01 six speed. I have always used 2nd gear from a dead stop. Never a need to slip 2nd gear(unloaded). I mean, you try using 1st unloaded. You move like 10 feet then you have to shift it.

I use 2nd most of the time in my truck. Being that second is lower in the 6 speed than my 5 speed, I don't see any reason not to start in 2nd. I use 1st on the very first take off in the morning, and on hills. Other than that, 2nd is where I start.

mine is an auto but everyone i know who has a stick starts in 2nd when unloaded. no slipping of the clutch needed. and even when i drive their trucks i do the same and it dosent at all feel odd.

no worries, throw it in 2nd and go unless towing even on a 5 spd

Alright sounds good. Now another dumb question when you all talk about slippen the clutch your talking about taking a longer time to let your foot of the clutch then necisary or is it anything besides droping the rig into gear. Because i dont take long to engage the clutch but i dont drop it unless im shitften fast. thanks
