Injector pump swap- tips or tools?

Looks like I may end up doing a pump swap on the company truck. Ive swapped pumps on the old 93 rotary pumps before. Are there any tricks or special tools needed to do a pump on a 99 than on the 93?

Before I yank the pump anything to look at. The truck to me always rans like crap, but it wasnt my truck, now they said over then past 2 weeks its gotten really bad.

thanks,

wallace

You need a small t bar puller and a set of torx sockets. All others are standard fare.

Whatch out for the key falling out. Lose it into the engine, and your job just got longer.

First thing you do when you take the breather off the front, turn the engine til the keyway is on top of the shaft. You would be real smart to replace the rear pump bracket with the replacement from Cummins, about $40 with bolts and all. Do not take the shaft nut off, just loosen a turn or two and pop the shaft from the gear with a small puller, I use a small steering wheel puller and had to get bolts the right length. The injector lines come off in two bundles, front and rear, don't take all the clamps off just the ones necessary to remove the bundles. When you reinstall the gear on the shaft get it spottless clean, brake cleaner or whatever.

I can't offhand think of anything else different from the earlier model.

Haulin..... I know I have asked you this before but do you have the cummins Part # for the brace you speak off, also if you rotate the shaft until the key is on top you probably woulndn't be a TDC or can you get TDC after the pump is out and not cause trouble

The gear only installs one way there is no timing on it. You should not need the part number as it is best to get the latest upgrade. Just ask the Cummins parts man for the part. If you have to have it, I could go through last years receipts for you, be a few days. Pretty tied up right now.

You dont need TDC to do a VP44 pump install , if you set it at TDC, the key on the pump shaft will be at the Six o'clock position. and have seen the key fall out when installed. also always check the key with a mirror once installed , I have seen the key crushed half way on.

just use a strapwrench to take the breather off. I think it only takes a 1/4 turn... its been a while.

good luck,
Jason

there are no writeups for this? I'm doing one this weekend.

Do you have to take any pullies off the front of the motor to get that cover off? The throttle body has to come off?

To get the injection pump off you don't have to remove the cover? I read that writeup Pro Street linked but am still slightly confused.

The Injection Pump just slides out? It's on a gear, not a pulley? How long does this swap take?

You remove the breather that is in the front cover. It just unscrews. You can get to the nut that is on the inj. pump.I used a single bar steering wheel puller and bought some bolts to screw in the gear that is on the pump for the puller.
I put it back together this morning. It runs great now.
