injection pump replacement
injection pump replacement
I'm considering purchasing an older motorhome that's been converted to a 99 24v 5.9. It's hundred of miles from my house, and isn't currently running. The present owner is short on cash and can't afford to repair it right now. It sounds to me from what I've read on this board (dead pedal recurrently) that the lift pump went out and took out the injection pump. (The engine probably has about 50k miles on it)
How hard is it to replace the injection pump and does it require any special tools? How long does it take to replace it? From what I've read on here, the lift pump replacement is fairly straightforward and quick. But is the injection pump replacement the kind of thing a reasonable good DIY'r can do without running into a lot of difficult problems or is it the kind of job most people leave for the pros?
I'm used to working on my Mercedes 5 cylinder diesels but I haven't replaced an injection pump before. Conceptually it seems pretty straight forward. On the Mercedes, timing is an important issue when replacing the pump, but on the 24v Cummins I assume that is all done electronically.

Best to have a factory service manual but these instructions will give you a good idea. It's not that hard.

Thanks. That was very helpful. It doesn't look too difficult. There was no picture of removing the gear from the shaft. I assume that is done from the front? Is the gear reinstalled by the bolt on the shaft?
