Injection pump change out
Injection pump change out
Ok I changed out the VP-44 Saturday morning. Had you read my prior post on surging you will know that two dealers had looked at it and one said it was the injection pump the other wasn't sure. I will post up a how to, if anyone is interested. New pump on and running, idel my fuel pressure dropped one psi, cruising 1.5 psi drop, wot 2 psi drop!!! Before I could never get my boost above 26 I hit 31 lbs. after change out. Here is my theory, lost the LP in October along with my fuel milage. About a six weeks ago started getting a very slight surge then it would go away. First weekend in April going turkey hunting two hours from home engine starts surging only at an idel 200 rpm's then would clear out. Had the two dealers check it out the following week. It has continued to do this, but only when the truck was at normal operating temps, had been driven for 20-30 miles and was above 80 degrees ambient temp. My thoughts are this; as the engine warmed up and the ambient temp got above 80 the viscosity of the diesel would thin out. Since the VP-44 is fuel cooled the temp of the fuel would continue to get warmer the longer the engine ran, making the symptons worse. The pump had intial damage in October from th LP failure but not enough to "fail" but over the last six month has gradually gotten worse. The new LP was supplying all the fuel that the vp-44 could handle, but the injection pump was damaged to the point that it could not put up the pressures that were really needed, ie. under fueling the engine. I am really surprised the the EZ did not take the damaged injection pump out when it was first hooked up, or maybe that says something for EDGE products ;D. Again if anyone would like detailed info on the change out I would be glad to post a how to. Took about four hours to complete.
