I use one of the bolts from the intake plenum cover, thread it into the top of the injector, and pop the injector with a pair of needlenose pliers or a short prybar.
Special tools are nice to have, but when it turns out that simple. free vs. any money at all... free is nice.

^^Agreed!
Do exactly what pind has mentioned...thread in an intake bolt into the top of the injector and use whatever to pry against the rocker arms. Injector should pop right out.

i utilized the same technique on the weekend with some great help from others - worked like a charm.
got me thinking though - what are the female threads on the top of the injector for? just there for the above mentioned reason?

Yes, that's why they are there.
When we have "design reviews' at Cummins, these are the kinds of things that are addressed. Before a design can even be rapid prototyped, it has to be showned that it is friendly both to the factory to build and also to service.

Changing injectors on the Cummins is easy as pie. It took me 2.5 hours my first time and 1.25 hours the second time. Take your time and make sure the copper washers come out with each injector.
Be sure to change the back injectors first and work your way forward. This way you are not hurting by the time you are done. Swapping injectors on the Cummins requires laying on the engine, but at least you do not have to pull the cab.

Be sure to pull the injector crossover tube (I forgot the name of it) out of the way before pulling the injectors otherwise damage can occur to the tube tip.

I believe credit goes to Diesel Dan for what I used: 1" socket, metric bolt, nut, washer. Place socket over inj, thread bolt (with nut towards top and washer under) into inj and wrench down on nut (with backup on bolt) till it pulls inj up. Similar to high dollar tool without the cost.
