I really don't know, you tell me!?

I've got a new prolem that popped up about 2 weeks ago. When I step on the gas I get what I can only describe as a knocking/fluttering noise from the exhaust. This started shortly after installing the jammer 5's. i took them out and had them checked and there are all good, but still I get the noise. I've checked all the fluids, changed the fuel filter, re-tightened all the lines and did everything else I can think of. I can hear it very slightly at idle but mostly just as I step on the gas. Sorry about the long post, but it's starting to get to me.

I just recently have been hearing a rather wierd noise myself. So after the oil change I left her running and decided to poke around the engine. As soon as I opened the hood I heard a rather loud rattling/ticking. I tried looking around and what not, couldn't find the source. So I climb on the bumper, put my hand on the large bracket holding the alternator to lean forward and the noise stopped. Would come back when I took my hand off and go away again if I put my hand on it again. It may be worth checking out... not sure if its your problem though, b/c I can really only hear my noise at idle.

If it is a kinda soft knocking/fluttering sound, it could be what PChouinard mentioned. If your exhaust manifold cracks, or a gasket starts leaking. It will make a ticking sound. This can be heard better when the engine is cold due to the crack being a little larger in the cast. Maybe have a look and see if you see and soot around the exhaust manifold, if not...then start checking other places. If you want you could also make a video of it if you are worried and post it up.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll have to go take a look at the manifold and see if I can see anything. I'll keep everyone posted on my findings.

ok I checked for cracks, etc and nothin'. When the engine is cold it's not that noticable, but once it warms up then you can really hear it. Even more noticable when it holds a certain RPM beween shifts. Majority of the noise is coming from the stacks and that makes it very easy to hear(since they are right by my head). The truck almost sounds like a gasser exhaust with all the back pressure. ANybody with ideas please chime in, I am willing to check anything.

I've heard something similar in a 3rd gen truck, which turned out to be valve related. With noises like that I wouldn't mess around and run the truck until you know for sure what it is..

do you know of a way to check if it's valve related? I just did the valve lash thing and all seemed good. Speaking of the valve lash.....should rocker arm socket piece be loose? They were all stuck in a rigid position and it made it impossible to check the valves, but with a little wigglin' they became moveable and I was able to check 'em. Any thoughts on it?

I'm still betting on an exhaust leak. When the engine is cold, clean around all the exhaust ports really well then let the motor dry. Take a piece of chalk and color around all the manifold mating areas. Run the engine until it makes the noise and then check for black marks on the chalk. This should identify where the blow-by is. Run the chalk around all other exhaust connections as well. Also, did you look at the bottom of the manifold with a mirror? This is where mine started to crack and I didn't see it until it came around to the top between #3 & 4 cyls.

alright I cleaned all around the manifold real good and didn't find any cracks. I'll have to wait and see when I run it later if I get any evidence of leaks. While the truck was running I climbed underneath and noticed that alot of loud noise was coming from the engine oil pan area. Not positive yet, but I might be losing oil somewhere cause I just put oil in it the other day to top it off. I did get some white smoke the other day just after I started down the road and I noticed some coming out from the blow-by tube as well. Could this be the source of my noise? Sorry so long, but I got lots of info.

Have you ever used a Fram oil filter? If so, that would explain a lot of blowby and probably a piston slap noise. They can come apart and plug the piston cooling nozzles. The resulting piston and cylinder wall wear cause the othr symtoms.

I have used Frams in the past but it has been awhile and this noise just produced itself within the last two weeks or so. The noise from the exhaust is so loud that I can't tell if it is coming from anywhere else. Still trying to track down any exhaust leaks.

I have searched all over the exhaust manifold and can't find any soot or other evidence of a leak. I have some in and out shaft play in the turbo, could this be the culprit?

You pulling more boost now with the bigger injecoctors, right. I've blown out a few of the gaskets under the turbo exhaust base/between exhaust manifold. You'll see soot on the hood and all over the turbo. Did you remove your rockers when you pulled the injectors? If you did check your push rods/rockers to make sure everything is correct. You checked all of the bolts on your exhaust manifold. the back two bolts have a habit of falling off the engine. Do you have a idea where the noise if coming from? Don't use the Fram filter, they have paper seals that plug-up your piston cooler squirts. You fleet guard filter or Wix filters. How long does your truck smoke white smoke on first start-up? You still get some after the truck is warm? Its hard to troubleshoot over the internet. My truck does the funny noise ever once and while. At that point I just start taking stuff off until I find something.
