I'm looking at picking up an HX35W to replace the HY35 that's on my truck now. In looking around, I have found two different versions of the HX35W that both claim to be direct replacements for the 5.9L Cummins. One of them has the vacuum diaphram can mounted on the intake housing of the turbo and the other one has the vacuum can mounted to a bracket attached to the exhaust housing side of the turbo. So what gives? Will either one of these turbos work on my '01 Cummins?

 

Both turbos will fit the one with the wastegate actuator mounted on the compressor housing has a 12cm exhaust housing. The other most likely has a 14 cm exhaust housing.

 

You want the one with the wastegate actuator mounted on the compressor housing. It has the exhaust elbow on the exhaust housing (just like youy HY) so you won't have to buy any more parts. Either one would work, you'd just need to buy more pieces and have to do some plumbing to run the older style turbo. They both probably have 12 cm housings.
