Unhappy HUGE MPG LOSS & Bad surging HELP!!!!!!

I had been getting 18 to 22 mpg running great for the last three years . Then **** hit the fan right before Christmas, dosen't want to start after sitting for more than 5-6 hr cranks and cranks then fires right off. Then went on a 1000 mile trip last weekend used 99 gallons of fuel .
On this same trip it started surging first pulling a EMPTY 24' goose neck 14,000 gvw. trailer in 6th gear crusie set at 80 mph and as we started up a hill the boost went up between 20-25psi. Then hold on! I thought it was going to tear itself in half ( like you were doing a tug-a-war on pavment or like tires spinning on ice at 80 mph then getting instant traction over and over) just brutal feeling!!! I didn't want to break down. So I started turning the cruise off at hills ,and manuelly slowly accelerating up hills (keeping the boost lower) this helpped a lot still acted up a little. But at one point on this trip I wasn't even pulling a trailer and was on a flat, laid into the skinny pedal to pass a tourist ,boost was between 30-35psi. (normal )and it started again fast-stop-fast-stop-fast-stop.. my fuel preasure never drops below 13psi.
I have no idea where to start and all the shops around here feel that if you alter factory spec. they don't want to touch it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Turn the key on-off-on-off-on and check the odometer to see if there are codes.

Is your FP gauge in line before or after your filter? Have you tried disconnecting the EZ to see if it helps or hurts it further?

It kinda sounds like it's the torque converter slipping causing a shudder.

EDIT: Opps. I didn't see that you're a 6 spd rower. My diagnosis still stands, except that maybe it's the clutch letting go.

Clutch wouldn't explain the hard start situation, though. Traditionally the hard start and surging is signs of an APPS or VP44 failure. It won't always throw a code. You could always try the APPS reset procedure in the Tech section and see if that helps with the surging problem. Does it blow white smoke after the hard start?

Also try cleaning the IAT sensor. Check intercooler boots for leaks.

The gauge is just before the pump after the filter, no I have not unplugged edge because then I would throw over boost codes and I think it would defuel the engine before it pull the power that causes the surging. (Am I wrong?)
