How to tell if you have a bad thermostat?
How to tell if you have a bad thermostat?
Diesel Gods,
I've noticed my temperature gauge takes a while to get to 180/190. Since the weather warmed a bit from the freezing temps we've had in the past week, my temp gauge takes longer to get to the normal 180/190 range. I warm up the truck about 5 to 10 minutes everyday no matter what the temp is outside. I drive 37 miles to work on interstate highway and it takes a good 10 miles at 70mph to get to 180/190. I'm wondering if my thermostat is bad? :'( Thanks. ;D
Re:How to tell if you have a bad thermostat?
Based on the history and many folks having problems (myself included), I'd check the thermostat. Mine had the lower leg broken on the thermostat and it took forever to heat up.

Re:How to tell if you have a bad thermostat?
DC has a TSB for thermostats for 98-02 24 valvers. TSB number 09-008-02. The thermostat will make a fluttering noise pulling heavy loads up hill. Might be worth having checked out.
Re:How to tell if you have a bad thermostat?
Your wasting your time warming it up for 5 - 10 minutes. You would be better off plugging it in, anytime the temp gets below 40 degrees. Plug it in for at least 2 hours. They warm up when you drive them. If I plug mine in for 2 hours, start it up and drive away within 2 minutes it will be warmed up within 5-7 miles of driving. I think yours sounds close to normal.
