this is what i did, cracked injector lines 1,3,4 at the injector. then bumped the starter, to start the fass a couple times, then cranked it a couple of times till fuel seapes from the injector lines. tightened the lines and start. Just loosen up the lines a little, it's a high pressure system. that worked for me just took alittle time. to crank and check the lines by myself. Shut it off if it starts with the injector lines loose, if not it will spray fuel all over.

I like to loosen the banjo on the inlet side of the vp44, turn the key on a couple of times, and bleed the air out there, and if the filter was changed that should get the air out of it too, then onto the pressure lines as posted above.

Loosen #1, #3, and #4 lines at the big nut that hooks to the injector. If posssible, have someone else crank the engine. As soon as it starts, tighten up the three nuts. It may knock and hammer for a few seconds but it will smooth out and run if everything was done right.

Ok, thanks for all the comments, but do I need to bleed the fuel lines prior to reconnecting them with the pump? Or do I just put the pump on and attach all fuel lines, then undo the lines at the injectors you mention and prime it all at once right there? That my be a stupid question, but I have never had to change a fuel pump of any kind before. Thanks again for the previous comments.

pump prob
Ive been reading your posts and i have a problem with my 98 24 v dodge i put a new fp and a filter on. I cracked 1,3,4,5 lines and cranked it over and just got a dribble out of lines cranked for a long time finaly started ran crappy with pedal down after a while it would idle great but give it any pedal and it did the same thing. When the fp went out i got a code 1688 but a friend told me that the intake heater was causing the no start issue, does the heater have anything to do with the starting or does the ip preassure heat up the fuel to run. New to working on this i have 160.000 miles on engine and never had a bit of problems your help would be apreciated. Rick

When I asked the same question about the P1688 code someone told me that the VP is toast. I don't want to be the one to tell you that though, so confirm it by doing a search for "P1688" anywhere on the internet.
By the way, he was right.

the po216 is the pump mechanics wearing out, the 1688 is the wiring in the pump giving up. many trucks run for a good while on the 216.....I would not drive a 1688 truck across the street
