how to prime a 24v

my '97 12v has a little push pump on the lift pump that you can use to prime your fuel system with after you change your fuel filter and such.

now on my '01, it has nothing of the such. how do you go about priming it? if you take the lines off the injection pump to change out banjo bolts, or put in a new system like Rod's Max flow system, how do you get fuel back in the lines?

i have noticed that i can turn the key on, and i hear somthing like a fuel pump running. is this a way?

The lift pump on a 24V is electric. I have never had any trouble restarting after a filter change normilly fires right up. I you change out the lines or banjos bump the starter and listen to the Lift pump its sound will change as it fills the system back up. You may have to bump it a couple of times. If you do an injector swap you will probably have to crack one of the injector lines open.

With a fuel system swap, make sure you fully prime the system, or you will have to bleed injectors. When I ran out of fuel (almost same as changing fuel system : ) I had to bleed 2 cyl. to get it started.

After you have the ignition switched to accessory and the grid heaters have cycled "wait to start".
Then bring out the can of ether, and small shot will bring things right back to life.

After fuel filter change or messing with fuel lines I will leave the drain valve open on the filter canister and bump the starter. Make sure you run a longer drain line and place a bucket under it. When you hear the lift pump cycle all the air will get pushed out of the canister, then close the valve and listen for the lift pump to load under pressure. This may take me a couple of times but it works.

On the same note as above,
after a fuel filter change, I leave the filter cannister cap slightly loose (2 turns or so), then bump the starter.
Since the air is on top it will get pushed out the loose cap as the cannister fills up.

Last filter change it started right up first crank.

First filter change, doing it the water drain way, it cranked and cranked and cranked, panic mode set in, before it started.

Worst case scenario is having to crack a couple of injector lines to get all the air out.

I have a hand held fuel pressure guage with a long hose, I unscrew the guage and hook the hose to the schrader valve and cycle the lift pump 2 times. Then unhook the hose.I put the end in a plastic milk jug to catch the diesel. It always starts right up, I read this tip here, so I am just passing it along.

If worst comes to worst, fill the canister with fuel and tighten it back up. It'a alot easier and less time consuming to wait and let the fuel pump remove the air from the filter ;D
