How much smoke is too much?

Hello, not sure if if I have a problem or not. I have 2002 H.O. .
Only added K&L air filter. It has 18000 miles. When I accelerate to merge into traffic, it blows a lot of black smoke Not sure if it should smoke that bad or not. Any ideas will be great.

Thanks

Mines not a HO, but I've never seen black smoke come out of her (him?).

I can "haze" the traffic behind me if I really romp on it, with light gray smoke.

I'd have to second the low boost.
Check your intercooler boots, hopefully one of them is loose and it's not a turbo problem.

Judging by your sig, you shouldn't have a problem with the dealer if it is a turbo problem, as long as the K&N (K&L?) didn't deposit oil on the turbo blades, and you remove it before taking it in.

phox

Sorry about that. It is a K&N. If it is dirty could that cause it to smoke?

boost leak? i doubt it. it's the high elevation. the HO's smoke decent for a stock truck....more than the ETC's up here at 7000+ feet. don't worry about it. bad air!

Tom

My HO blows some smoke. Not like the smoke with a Edge EZ or Comp, but it blows noticable smoke. Seems to have more in the summer, but I'm not sure.

If you can see the guy behind you when you accellerate then you don't have too much smoke.. When I go, it's like a solar eclips, day to nite, blackout, forest fire,...stealth mode. ;D ;D

Steve

Gee thanks for triggering my paranoia, guys!! I just had a similar event take place with the wife's HO.

I was pulling the fiver through OKC traffic yesterday, and noticed the following:

Outside temp was 97 and muggy

Speed - increased from from 55-65 in 6th gear, nearly floored the accelerator

Boost - climbed to 18 or so

No smoke until I backed off the accelerator pedal - then nice big cloud of black smoke - my wife noticed it two cars behind me.

Constant speed/accelerate is clear - releasing acclerator shoots puff of black smoke - does this seem normal?

[move]The signature line shows all the toys - no fueling boxes, air boxes, etc.[/move]

My 2500 with an EZ will throw a little puff of smoke when I let off the throttle every now and then. I've never seen it do it without the box hooked up though.

How much smoke is to much? When you can't see the intersection that you just went through, then you have JUST enough. ;D Seriously though, my truck with a Comp in EZ mode and on 5x5 will put a decent (for a stock truck that is) amount of smoke out from a light and will have the slightest haze from there on out. It clears up quick though.
