Help,
Need to replace the rear axle seals on my 1999 4x4, and need to identify the type of rear axle.

Last 9 digits of VIN are 1XG148053

Is is the 248, 267 or 286 axle?

I have not used vin. code for axials , the tag on diff. cover is one way , but I think there are only 2 to chose from , the Dana 70 or the Dana 80 .
to help , more info on your truck , 3/4 or 1 ton .
Also what I did when I got my truck [ used / 2nd hand ] was to go to the dealer with the vin. code and ask for a build sheet , then you do not have to look for info every time you need something and it is specific to just your truck .

Stamp on the Diff cover is:

43293 2
240 8

There is a band that is on the diff cover on the two left side bolts

Numbers on there, but only partially readable

If it is a 3/4 ton its probably a Dana 70. 1 tons have Dana 80's in the rear.

 

I have a 99 8800GVWR with the DANA 70 on the REAR. it's a limited slip diff mine.
look at the VEHICLE EQUIPMENT TAG on the underside of the Hood, near the back of the grille! it's write there.

 

if you have write: AXLE - ANTI SPIN DIFFERENTIAL you also have a limited slip rear DIFF!

 

If its a manual it has a D80
Mine is a Manaul 2500 with 8800 GVWR and it has a d80
