How do I do a trans fluid flush
An automatic will be tough....I believe they have a special machine that sucks all of the tranny fluid out. If you try to do it without this evacuator you won't get all of the fluid to drain. You'll only be able to do an incomplete R & R unless you have one of those machines, whatever they call them.
Drain the fluid, drop the pan, cycle the shift lever thru the ranges so the range-valve will bleed - you can loosen and drop the valve-body a little so the passages in the case and the servos and clutchpaks and TC will bleed - TC will bleed-down only to the hub - remove the cooler lines at the trans so the cooler will bleed - leave it sit for couple hours, reassemble everything, new filter\seal, pan gasket, new fluid, and yer good to go.
Other than that, you'll need the back-flush machine, as mentioned - still requires a new filter, aamopo

It can be done with out the machine , undo the pressure side of the trans cooler lines , a couple of 5 gal bucket to collect , get set up to pour about 16 qts of fluid into dipstick [ with out letting trans run dry ] large funnel .
Put in neutral & parking brake , start eng. [ best to have a 2nd person to turn off ing. , if the draining gets ahead of adding new ]
When the fluid from the pressure line starts looking like new , shut off eng. & seal up system , then check fluid level [ eng. running , trans in neutral ]
This is a good time to change filter & adjust bands [ before flush ]

There seems to be some disagreement on whether to flush or not to flush. Do a search and you will see what I mean. I decided to take a middle of the road position. I dropped the pan changed the filter and installed a drain plug. I drove the truck for about 1k miles then drained the pan using the drain plug. Took 5 quarts. Drove for another 1k miles and did it again. I went with Valvoline ATF+4. Now whenever my fluid gets cooked above 210* I just dump it. I have never seen anything so easy as draining with the drain plug. Can't understand why this is not a stock item. Much easier than draining oil. just my .03 cents.
I've been in the auto repair buis. for about 30 yrs. , this is new if you think that anything that came around in the last 20 yrs is not old , I try to base my decisions on facts & what ever knowledge I can gain , I have not seen enough to not do this , to the contrary , I spent some time checking out this when it 1st came about , changing 1/4-1/3 of of the fluid is not a change .
A few of the negatives , I found are the outrageous cost of the almost nothing machines [ just 2 containers on wheels with some bells & lites ]
, some of the trans shops that I would send stuff out to , got scared in the beginning , when a worn out trans would come in , they would flush & the customer would come back & complain about trans not shifting rite anymore , as time went on , the industry got it figured that cleaning the slug out made the difference .
All the trany shops that I know of flush .
If you base decisions on anybody saying any neg. , you'll never do anything .

I can't argue with John's experience...especially when so many let a tranny fluid changes go so long!
I will, however, admit that I do much the same as 'Couchgrowl' ..... BUT... I started with a brand new DTT, use Amsoil ATF, and drain deep dish pan @ 30,000 miles. I get about 40% out (12 qts) each time, and it looks, feels and smells excellent . This may be overkill to some, but IMO, it's cheap insurance for max mileage out of my DTT investment!
