How bad is the VP44?
Hey guys, I have my heart set on finding my 12 valve, but looking at whats for sale in my area I see an awful lot of really nice looking 24 valves, which leaves me with only one question, how bad is the stock VP44? I see a lot of people with failures on this site, so is it really that bad, if i bougt a 24 valve(which I would be modding) should I buy a aftermarket pump? thanks guys.

Personally, I don't see any problem with it.
The problem is with the lift pump. Keep an eye on your pressure and when the lift pump starts to go, replace it and you'll be just fine.

They are horrible. I've replaced 7 (total) in the past 2 or 3 years on 5 trucks. The replacement job is real easy, i can swap one out in under 2 hours, but the $$$ for the new pump is what hurts.
I dont think ill own another vp44'd truck. She runs excellent and all but just cant justify it

I have only my one truck, but I have had 45k miles and 4 years of no problems whatsoever.
I don't mod my truck at all and I don't haul too much anymore. I drive like a grandma according to my wife, but my truck has never let me sit. Im sure plenty of people hate the VP44, but Im sure there are just as many out there that are happy with it.
I figure a $1500 replacement part someday is cheaper than a new one. $15,000 can buy me a few pumps! Id love a 12 valve too, but finding one is getting harder and finding a nice clean one is getting impossible.
Good luck in your search.

Its sounds like that some people have had them go out, some have not... but since you know its an issue just plan for it to be replaced eventually. Besides you want to modify it, so why not go with an aftermarket fuel system that'll be able to handle increased power and fuel demand if/when the LP goes.
I can't understand why anyone would have replaced the pump mulitple times. I mean how many times does it have to go before one realises that might not be the best route. I would have gotten an aftermarket fuel system LONG before I got to that 7th pump and it would have been way easier on the pocket book.

IT SAYS 5 DIFFERENT trucks AND all had UPGRADED lift pumps (I put fass on two of them and holley blue pushers on 3). All had 15 psi+ to the VP. What aftermarket vp44 are you talking about?

I read that, but it wasn't completely directed at you... more so to anyone in general who are just replacing stock parts with stock parts(parts with known issues that is) multiple times. I'm seeing that some guys don't want to go aftermarket for what ever reason and end up replacing stock parts over and over.
I quoted you b/c that comment got me thinking, on a different track though. No harm meant.

It is a conpletly different pump, the cp3 just pumps fuel at a high pressure all the time, and the injectors tell it when to fire, the vp44 is a (smart) pump that just pumps high perssure when the injector needs to pop off (fire). AS for if one rebuilt pump is better that another, if it is a certified rebuilder (most are) then they have the same eletroices and brass slevees in them.

Over on DT a guy asked about the Hot Rod VP44... another guy responded saying that a local diesel place told him their longevity is worse then a standard VP44.
