Holding Second Gear
Holding Second Gear
Good evening,
Just finished up my 47RE rebuild. Truck is doing the same thing it did before the rebuild (to a much lesser extent). When I come to a stop, the transmission stays in second gear.
1) The solenoid and transducer are new, so they're out.
2) The bands (as well as everything else) are brand new, and freshly adjusted.
3) Operating temperature ~165f degrees Fahrenheit
Not sure what's going on here... everything looked great when I was inside the case.
Any suggestions?

Did you take the governor apart and clean it well during the rebuild ?
Might be why the problem is still there.
Bringing this one back from the dead...
A solid year after the rebuild, and 30,000 miles, the trans has been working great. I never did conclusively determine what caused it to stick in second, but it went away.
I just did a service on the trans, in conjunction with a rear differential rebuild, and when I pulled it out of the shop it seems to be doing it again... sort of.
I haven't put any real miles on it yet; I just got it finished up last night and did some short runs to refill the fluid properly. I don't recall this transmission having second gear starts following a service before. Is that common, or am I just lucky?
Hope the Allison in my new truck ages a bit more gracefully than this 47RE...
EDIT: I can start in first manually by putting the shifter into first. That is a significant difference from the last time.
