Re:HO/6spd

I have put 10,000 miles on mine since I took it off the dealer's lot to go deer hunting in August 2002. It is moving into the 19s in highway driving and around 17 around town. The surprising thing is it gets between 15 and 17 offroad in 4 high

Re:HO/6spd

My '01 HO averages almost 21.5 overall. That's a 160 mile trip to Savannah and back every week with a 10 mile trek into the city every day while I'm there. The truck started off getting 19 and steadily increased to my current mileage at about 15K miles.

Re:HO/6spd

I have the HO and 4.10 rearend. I am only seeing 16 to 16.5 MPG. This has been checked with city only and highway only driving. Nothing seems to change it. I guess that is OK since I can drive as hard as I want and still get 16. I was expecting more though.<br><br>Right now I am at around 6500 miles. I pulled a triple axle construction trailer with my Dad's powerstroke on it for a while to try and break it in. During this trip (250 miles) I got 12.3 MPG. That trip did nothing to help the mileage.

Re:HO/6spd

I am going to echo what Gary said, my mileage is about the same as his on freeway and while pulling.

Re:HO/6spd

Any idea what is wrong with mine? With 6500 miles on the odometer the mileage should be increasing right?<br>

Re:HO/6spd

Your mileage probably results from the 4:10's.<br>Just a guess.

Re:HO/6spd

Hopefully that is the case. If not I will be somewhat upset. :'(<br><br>Do you think it may continue to improve?

Re:HO/6spd

couple of points: first, mileage can continue to improve until about 50,000 miles depending on how you break it in. If you tow a lot and make it work hard all the time, the wear-in curve is much shorter at about 10,000 miles or perhaps 15,000. 250 miles of towing will not break anything in ;D. If you drive empty it can take up to 50,000 miles. That said, I'm hearing from most guys that they see no more than 1-2 mpg improvment over this time period. Also, every truck and every driver is different.<br><br>Second, you can expect a significant reduction in fuel economy at high RPMs (above 2000-2200). As Smokey suggested, your 4.10s are probably to blame because this represents a 16% increase in your RPMs. For example, the 02 six speeds with stock 265/75 tires (depending on tire style and air pressure) run at about 2200 at 75 mph with 3.54 gears. your 4.10s will push you up to 2500 at that speed and out of the engine's efficiency band. The cummins likes to run at about 1900.<br><br>So 16.5 mpg does not surprise me with 4.10s. I get 18.5 at 65mph but when I drive 80 I get only 17. I have 3.54 gears on my '02 HO short box with 10,000 miles on it.

Re:HO/6spd

In my mind, fuel economy depends more on how and how fast you drive, how the truck is loaded, the weather conditions, the terrain you drive in, which rear end ratio and transmission, and level of bombs. <br><br>Dittos, also, to everything Doug said.

Re:HO/6spd

I know I have a 12v but I saw an increase in mpg when I hit close to 100k. it went from 19mpg to 20 or 21. I drove a lot over the highway so I have calculated it many times. now I am out of the college I was going to. I usally get 18 around town. That is unless I get a lead foot and try to smoke out the whole town.
