High Idle

Is there an option to get ECM reflashed by the dealer so that the truck will have high idle feature? My dad is interested and he has an 02 6 speed. Thanks for the help

Tell them that you would like TSB 18-004-04 done. That gives the explanation and instructions how to do it.

As far as cost, it depends on your dealer. They may do it for free if you have a lot of work done there, or they may charge you a flat rate of about an hour.

It was on the truck when I got it. I went to the dealer to ask them about it. One of the Dodge dealers in Tulsa is pretty cool. He said it is a flash of the ECM... Lots of guys have it on trucks that see a lot of stop and go or extended idle time... Seemed to be pretty common for them to do.

just went to the dealership to see how much this is going to be and view the actual TSB...

0.8 hours for the reflash.
dealership closest to me, rate of $111/hour.

a heads up,
reading through the TSB it says, "This bulletin applies to DR vehicles equipped with a 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine (sales code ETC or ETH) and an automatic transmission..." While at the dealership i noticed this conflicting information (calling out sales code ETC and ETH but going on to say it applies to automatics) and wasnt sure if i should pay for them to reflash it, but it looks like displacedtexan has a manual tranny with high idle enabled.

that is some serious cash for 10 minutes.

Mine wanted to charge me $90 bucks, their standard hour rate.
I politely said no thank you, it takes a maximum of 15 minutes to enable the high idle, so they decided to only charge me for 1/2 hour, $45, still overpaid.

Upon further thinking...

Are you talking about the high idle that ramps PRM up to speed warm up?

Mine always idles somewhere around 830... Service guy said it keeps oil flowing better during extended idling.

Dang, there are a lot of these "high idle" threads popping up, I forget which one I'm posting in.

Here is the proper TSB for the 2nd gen 24 valve trucks.

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2001/18-019-01.htm

The one ending in 04 is for the 3rd gen only, and is a different high idle that we 2nd gen guys can't get.

Some good info, i have a question about my truck and if i need to replace the batteries. When the grid heater kicks on, my lights get really dim, alot more then they use to, i am wondering if it is time to replace the batteries with some optima red tops. The batteries i have now are the originals ones and i think they are getting tierd. Thanks

i 2nd that!

i wish the technicians at the dealership were aware of the capabilities of their own product! but you can wish in one hand and $*#& in the other! i really confused them when i inquired about the 3 cylinder option!

i also questioned the 0.8 hours of time it takes for this operation. granted, that 0.8 hours is for the 3rd gen. but even half an hour for the 2nd gen to check/uncheck a box when the TSB tells you exactly where to go...

to correct myself earlier, the original TSB i posted, 18-004-04, is for the 3rd gen trucks. ***EDIT: i actually posted this TSB in a different thread; thoroughly confused, im out

displacedtexan,
your idle ramps to 830? anymore? i am looking for the TSB phox posted, the ramp up to 1200rpm and the 3 cylinder warm up. when the temp drops to -40 and my truck sits at work 9 hours during the day w/o a plug-in, i want to let it idle for some time with this feature.

No, always idles there, when it peplaced my PSD I wondered about the idle being as high as it was, I went to a dealer and asked them.

I had not found DTR at that point

I would, I have always preferred to replace things like the batteries before necessary, saves headaches...
