high idle

i want a high idle on my tuck this winter. it has the factory high idle but the parameters are so low that its only ever kicked in once. i'd rather not have a mechanical one. and the electonic ones are expensive. is there a way a guy could make one? aslo ive been wondering if theres a way that you could use the cruise control as a high idle like big rigs have.

thanks

Here's a recent discussion on the subject. I've been busy and havn't had a chance to try it out. Not in too much of a hurry either. It was 90 here yesterday. The factory high idle would do me no good around here. Maybe somebody can try it and report their findings

i got electric solonid from a old 87 dakota. put it on a switch. when i flip the switch it sends power to it. it will hold it open but will not push it open so you have to push the pedal a little to engage it. very cheap to make and fits under the tps cover.

Or you could do the ol' stick between the seat and gas pedal trick that so many use.[laugh]

hammerdowndodge, how does your setup work? do you have pictures?

FFmike 10-31-2010 05:02 AM

My old naturally aspirated 7.3L with a stanadyne IP had an OEM solenoid idle kick-up that was in conjunction with timing advance for cold weather startup. It functioned just like hammerdowndodge described as far as when/how the idle went up. But since I had already advanced the timing manually and turned the pump up some, I just rerouted a toggle switch to the solenoid and would use it whenever I needed. Had to d/c the timing wire also or sounded like I was gonna send a piston through the hood when it was cold. One other thing was that the rod was threaded that allowed for about 500 rpm of adjustment up/down.

I would say you could do a parts search for one, but last I checked because I was thinking the same thing as hammerdowndodge, they were over $120 for replacement. I think Autozone had one for like $20 or $25 that came with a bracket on it. Just do a search for an idle stop solenoid and look for their house brand.

redneck, klx650a2 in 'Stoon had something on his 2nd gen similar to hammerdown. His selonoid came from a gm product. You could pm him to get the low down.
I rigged up something that goes between the bottom of the dash to the go peddle. about 6 inch long. The only thing I have noticed is that my rpms will slowly drop from say 1200 to 900 in approx 30 min. I mostly use my pacbrake. Works much faster at warming up the Cummins.

Here is a TSB on it:

yah i can get a pic 4 u. the solonid will not push the lever it will only hold it. so when you flip the switch then push the pedal i little way then it will hold it where ever you have it set. when u want it off just kill the switch. i will got out to the farm tomorrow and get u a pic. it is very simple.

Nice pic. What' s the actual length of the stick? This way I can go ahead and just cut the stick to length and be done with it instead of having someone hold the gas pedal down while I take the measurement. Thanks.

KATOOM 12-23-2010 11:30 PM

I'm just curious what it says on the stick.[laugh]

MontanaRam 12-26-2010 01:38 PM

I use my window scraper and wedge it between the driver seat and console. Provides good adjustability.

I second the wooden idle control !! If you cut it to fit up to the seat bracket, you can use the elec seat adjuster to fine tune your rpms [guitar]

cozzo1000 12-27-2010 11:10 AM

Before I got my Smarty Jr, I would start the truck, turn the cruise control on, step on the gas till about 1200 RPM and then hit the SET button. The engine would run at 1200 RPM.

Of course, shift your tranny P or neutral.

Dr. Evil 12-27-2010 02:49 PM

^^ Yeah, that doesnt work on a second gen. ^^

Not saying you're wrong but you'd be the only 2nd gen I've ever heard of that does that.

well i think it was from the privious owner,,, not sure if he had a smarty installed high idle or what... but i took it to the dealer to get a lil check up, new truck had to haul my 5th wheel and didnt have gauges on yet. they checked all my pressures and the ECU and stuff, and it never worked after that... but i HAD it!!! i found it by accident and it wasnt no -5 outside it was like 45-50

craneage2001 12-29-2010 07:12 PM

I've wondered if there isn't some way to emulate the speed sensor in order to use the cruise control buttons...from what I've read, its just a variable resistance/two wire sensor (if the cruise uses the one on the rear diff) If it's possible, it would be simpler to switch two wires than the 6(?) for the APPS mod.

I also wondered about just getting a spare sensor, since they're rather cheap, and looking into fabricating some sort of tone ring for the crank, etc...

1dumrednek 09-19-2011 04:48 PM

does anyone in saskatoon, sk have a smarty for a 24v that would be willing to activate a high idle?

also if anyone has any more info on cruise possibly working that would be great

thanks

Doj Dewd 09-19-2011 04:58 PM

the cruise will not work on the 2nd gen trucks. however, there is a way to simulate the smarty high idle and have manual control over it.

i saw there was a moparman1973 link . . . that should be all the info you need.

the smarty high idle kicks up when it is pretty cold, and then shuts down 3 cylinders if it is REALLY cold out.

the moparman mod gives control over this. the ONLY drawback to it is no variable idle control. just 1200.

i am about to start the wiring/soldering in the project box hopefully within the next week . . .

i have been putting it off and putting it off . . . this gives me the spark again!

1dumrednek 09-20-2011 11:07 AM

Ya I'm building the kit. Just need the software turned on.

1dumrednek 10-25-2011 05:24 PM

hooked up to the dodge scan tool and have all the updates for my truck. still no high idle with the resistors in place. whats wrong here?

Cummins 1200 RPM Idle Controler ;)

cnhdoc 10-26-2011 09:55 PM

i used to do the stick in the seat trick for high idle in winter and would replace apps sensors every 2 hours would end up with a skip in the sensor at the same position as it sat at high idle so use caution just my .02 cents
