HELP!!! Stuck in Seattle

Hello,
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500, stock except for a fuel pressure warning light. I was driving down I-405 when the truck stop. Coast to the side of the freeway. Truck turns over, I can hear the fuel pump working, but will not fire.
The truck has been having the dead tach problem which I suspect is the camshaft position sensor.
I changed the fuel filter, and cracked the valves to bleed air, but it still will not fire. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
I triple cycled the ignition, codes were p 0500.
Could a bad camshaft sensor cause this ?

According to the WIKI, fault codes, all generations.

P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor A

I think a bad cam sensor could cause it though.

Thanks rebal, yeah I know about the dreaded vp44. I am hoping for something less expensive. The fuel pressure warning light did not come on and the fuel pump has about 4000 miles on it. My truck also only has 86,000 miles. So it would be kind of early, mileage wise, for the vp44 to go out, I hope.

its hard to say but the vp has a key stroke life span most early ones had mech, and elec, issues most now days are electrical why some go 250k and other 4k is a? my last few pumps have been blue chip pumps and they have been on now for 5 years and 170k and no sign on trouble, but lets just hope its simple, for you this time

FWIW when I was in Western WA, Sedro-Woolley I would sometimes get the code P0500, mostly in wet weather. Truck ran fine, it is the speed sensor, I think it is somewhere around the rear end.
