Help!! engine trouble
Hi all, Ok I have an early 2001 2500 LWB dodge cd. It is all stock with no mods. The other day I was leaving work and went to start it. It made some terible noise like the starter was slipping with an occational high pitch klanging. After two attemps and two manifold warm ups she started but she was rough and had developed a womph. the engine light was also illuminated. I drove her home (< 1mile) and parked her. I called my friends at the local GMC dealer to see if they could take a look the nexted day. ( she went to the GMC dealer because the reputation of the local Dodge dealer is terrible to say the least.) They took her in and discovered that a bracket had fallen off the rear valve. They called Dodge and they were told that that is not supose to happen. They replaced the bracket adjusted the valve and but her back together. When they hooked her up to the computer it read the the heater manifold had cold air?? they cleared it and took her on a test drive. All seemed ok. I picked her up and drove her home. A few days passed and she developed a clack which to me sounded like a bad valve. I made an apponitment to take her back in. Went to start her this morning and she went into the I don't want to start today. Sounds like the starter is missing and making a loud klanging when turning her over. ( what the hellis going on??) A little more about the pickup. She lives in Gunnison CO. It is cold here between -30 and 30 in the winter. She is plugged in every night. Recently she has not been making apropriate tempurature <160 while driving. She has just under 64000 miles and guess what the cummins five year warrenty expired last may... If you can please help I have made an appontment to take her to the dodge dealer in the morning( against my better judgement) mabey they have seen this before though. If i have left anything out the you need to know please tell me. MAny thanks _MAtt
I'm not sure what your problem is, but I don't understand how the warrenty can be expired. At 64K miles, your under the 100K warrenty and an 01's five years should not expire until sometime in 06. May of 2000 seems like a pretty early build date for an 01.
could use the oversized starter contact and plunger kit....cured mine.the plunger will stick to the bad contacts and continue to run for a while causing these sounds....did it to me....was doing it for 1 year till i got off my butt and replaced the starter contacts, now it starts better then new and no overrunning the starter. as for the grid heater, look into the relay, solenoids, or the filiment., swap out the grid relay....no work check for solenoids woring ie voltage at the grid heater contact points, if u have voltage and it still doesn't work, take the air horn off and see if the filiment is burnt out.
When you got a moment fill out your signature...

August 2000 was about the earliest you could buy a 2001. So your 5 years could be up. Something does not sound right. You might have something hanging a valve open. Walve train problems are not common.
I have noticed that 2001 was a funny model year and there were some 01 models built as early as Jan. 2000. Kinda the same as the 95 Neons that were built in late 93. Anyway, it sounds to me like he is describing that the "Y" piece between the rocker arm and the two intake or exhaust valves got spit out, probably because a valve stuck open, possibly getting smacked by the piston. I would guess that the valve got sticky due to long idle times or low engine temps. I have seen several of these engines bend pushrods due to this condition, and this may be a similar effect.
