Help, dead on road

A friend of mine just called to let me know that his 2000 24V was running great until it decided to just shut off with no hesitation or stumble. The truck won't fire now. I told him to see if his fuel filter is good and also check lift pump. He just sold a Powerstroke to get this Dodge so he is probably second guessing my recommendation at this time. Any other suggestions on what to look for would be appreciated.

Assuming he has fuel in the tank, I would have him check for fuel at the filter when the starter is bumped. If there is none, lift is bad. If there is fuel there, get some codes out and see if there's a new vp in his future.

Is there a procedure to verify that the VP 44 is dead? We are getting a good fuel supply at the fuel filter while cycling the key to crank position.

check for codes especially 0216, turn the ignition on and off 3 times without engageing the starter, codes should appear if any.

The only way I have heard to verify a dead vp is to take it off and carry it to a certified bosch repair facility. We have one near me that can rebuild/test the vp on a bench machine.

Check for codes like mini said, probably have the dreaded death code. If so I'd replace the lift pump as well. To test the lift pump you have to crank it over in a cup for X amount of time and measure how much it put into the cup to figure the flow rate per minute. It may be flowing but it also may not be flowing the required gpm at this time...or for awhile which could lead to a dead vp. I suppose you could crack the injector lines at the injectors and see if any of them are getting fuel.

Good luck, bad thing to happen to a guy who dropped a ford. If it's the VP after this bill he'll be upset for sure.

Can the codes be checked without a scan tool, just by cycling the key 3 times? Does anyone know where I can find a listing of codes? Thanks for everyones help with this.

The truck is showing a P1688 code. Does this indicate a dead VP-44? Where's the best place to buy one from?
