Help. Chip Question
Help. Chip Question
Some questions.
2001.5 Cummins
1. With an Edge EZ chip set on Economical for gas mileage, what should the max turbo boost be?
2. If my chip went out, would the truck run like stock?
3. My truck will not boost more than 20 psi, and I think I remember it boosting more than that pulling a heavier trailer than I am pulling on this trip.
Any comments, questions, or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

With an 01 and automatic trans there is no boost elbow (there is no place to put it). While the ez does have a boost fooler the hardline waste gate on the little hy35 turbo will not allow more than 20ish psi without modification. There are several options you can use
a j hook such as this premade one
01-02 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Automatics J-Hook Turbo Boost "Increaser" 182555
You can do it yourself with an s hook and a turnbuckle from home depot or the like place
Lehigh 350 lb. 3/8 in. x 8 in. Stainless-Steel Hook-and-Eye Turnbuckle-7112S - The Home Depot along with this
Lehigh 10 lb. x 2-1/8 in. Stainless Steel S-Hooks (2-Pack)-7152S - The Home Depot these are not necessarily the right size you would use
A third option is to use something that you can place inside the hardline to restrict air flow. A spent 22 shell casing fits nicely and you can a drill a very small hole in it that will allow some air through, the size of the hole will dictate at what psi the waste gate will open. However with just an ez iirc the most psi you will see is approx. 27-28psi so the hole or spring pressure is really irrelevant as you wont get enough psi to do any damage. Now if you are adding injectors or other go fast goodies that will take that psi well into the 30's or 40's then you may want to worry about that but by that time that little hy turbo will be way beyond its map and you would be changing turbos anyway in which case the waste gate mechanism will be different and more than likely no longer a problem.
If the ez fails it may or may not run like stock it depends on how it fails. It may cause drivability issues, or more likely a variety of codes that would be associated with what the ez does such as fueling map errors or map sensor errors. Though the ez is simple enough to disconnect and see what happens when disconnected
If the max psi does not go above 20 such as without modification to the waste gate it will not impede horsepower with the ez it will only create higher egts. I ran mine without any modification for a while until I finally got around to making a jhook for it. I only noticed somewhat lower egts when I was above 25 psi or so which in reality is not that often. for me it was only on the long pulls here in the mountains going a up a long pass for example pulling a trailer.
