Help with cam position sensor???

Ok, had the whole experience with the tach going crazy, loss of power, yada yada yada. Called the Dodge house, they told me it was the crank position sensor. Went to NAPA bought a replacement for $84. Went home pulled the started and ***..... my truck doesn't have a crank position sensor. So I did some more research and I belive the problem is the cam position sensor. Is this correct? How do I replace it?

Thanks

It is a pure mother without taking the pump off. I forget the size but iirc it required a long allen head with 3/8 drive extension to get to it.

You may be right, I didn't see any codes for cranksensor for 2001 year. The camshaft sensor is next to injection pump and a real pain to get to. Will need a mirror and flash light to see it. Just below injection pump. One allen head bolt holds it in, I think 3/16 but not sure. Put oil on o-ring and use twisting motion to get new one in. Good Luck

If you have a crank position sensor, it will be on the block behind the starter. Your cam position sensor is tucked between the VP-44 and the block. Have fun getting to it without removing your injector pump. It can be done, just a pain in the a$$. Good news is that the parts are interchangeable. The CKP and CMP are the same part number.

Are you sure? I don't think they are the same thing.

That's what the guy behind the counter at the dealer told me. I could be wrong, but might not hurt to call your dealer and ask. You might even call NAPA to get the p/n for a CMP and compare it to the sensor that you have.

the parts are not the same 98.5 ,99 have crank and cam sensors your 01 just has the CAM sensor its a pain to get to it but with calm mind its doable you need a 5mm long allen tip and about 12" of extension .DONT CROSS THREAD THE BOLT GOING IN ! try and use your finger tips to start the bolt back in using a mirror will help you see the wire clip to remove it . good luck and take a deep breath before you start . its a pain but easily doable

I use a real long (13")T handle 5mm Allen wrench with a Allen ball end and it makes it a snap to do

.....also send the wife and kids to the store..
you'll be creating new curse words while performing THIS job......

I did mine last week,...it took about 10 minutes to get the old one out....
and about a hour to get the new one in and the hold down bolt started straight.

I removed my Cam Position sensor on my 99 to inspect it while I was changing my Crank Position sensor and it didn't take me very long at all to get it out, cleaned and re-installed. I was practically sitting/lying on the valve cover/engine bay when I did it. That way I could get my arm down and underneath to move the allen screw with my hand.

I believe it took me all of 10 minutes,LOL.

Also, The Cam Sensor and Crank Sensor are not the same thing. Cam sensor looks like the pic above, while the crank sensor comes out of the block and turns to 90 degrees upwards.

Changed the sensor on my 98.5 and it was fun. Pulled the left battery so I could see better. That bolt was extremely tight in the sensor. I would try it without removing the pump.

The part number from Cummins is 4921597 (40.00). The size is 5mm allen head I got a long bit socket to do it or cut a long allen key and weld it to a old socket. 3/8 ratchet long extensions. It makes it easier to access with long allen bit so you clear the harness. I used a long extension also. You have to get it from the back of the power steering. Good luck I changed my friends this way. I got to do mine when I did the vp44.
