I would unplug the heater when you go to start it. Once started, the engine will do the heating. I would get another battery when you can afford it, as it is best practice to run them about the same age. I am guessing that they are at elast 4-5 years old, which means they are mostly used.
Glad to hear the new T-Stat did the trick!
