Hard to Start When HOT

Boy I have read and read trying to resolve this issue. When the truck is cold it starts great but after working her and warm it is hard to start. It will take lot's of cranking to fire it up. The Dodge dealer said it was the lift pump and installed the new version in the fuel tank for $1,000 but It didn't work!!!

After it is started it runs great. Could this be the injector pump??? I'm worried that if I keep taking it to the dealer they will keep puting parts on it until the bump into a solution (at my cost).

Any of you had this problem and got her fixed??

Info: 1998.5 1 ton Dullie. 24 valve 5.9 175k miles

PS. No check engine light or codes

first off NEVER go to the dealer that ripped you off for the lift pump again. You could buy a FASS pump for under $600 and never had to worry about factory junk again. Secondly is there any codes comming up? It could be the IP, or it could be the Intake Air Temp sensor, I've heard about this a while ago. Also fill in your sig. so we know a little more about what we are trying to talk about

mine did this when i had a fuel leak it was so small that it didn't puddle and barly allowed dust to collect on the line it ended up being an injector line lossing it's prime when the motor would heat up.

My Gawd! $1,000 for a in-tank junk pump...

I got a Carter Campaign pump ($50) and a Vulcan big line kit ($129) for less than $200

http://www.frontiernet.net/~mopar197...paign_pump.htm

Geez! You could of got a Walbro or a FASS for MUCH LESS!

Now the ugly part you got to pull out all that junk pump and install a straw kit...

First post, welcome aboard!

First, I hate to say this, but every body else is right, that in-tank fuel pump is junk, sooner or later you'll have to spend more money to replace it. For $400-600 you could of gotten the FASS or Walbro, which are the "Cadilacs" of lift pumps.

Second, my 01 had that exact same starting problem, it would start with just a tap of the starter, except when it was hot, then it took several full cranks before it fired. I haven't done anything to fix it, so I'm not sure if its fixed or not. Two things that I was told could be the problem; 1) old software in the computer, some people solved this problem by having the computer reflashed with the latest software at the Dodge dealer, and 2) replace the injection pump (VP44). Apparently hard hot starts are the first sign that your injection pump is going bad. You can check for any trouble codes from your computer by using the key method, do this with your ignition key (in less than five seconds): key off, key on, key off, key on, key off, key on, and leave it on. Any trouble codes will be displayed in your odometer, followed by "p-done." I believe this works on 2000 and newer trucks only. If you get the code p-0216, this means your injection pump is bad.

Third, you might want to install a fuel pressure gauge to monitor fuel pressure, do a search in this forum for instructions. Low fuel pressure from a bad lift pump will kill your injection pump.

Good luck.

Welcome aboard!

Now....please fill out your sig so we know what you're running!

If you've a 2nd gen 24V, you will most DEFINITELY need a fuel pressure gauge - lack of FP / flow overheats and KILLS the VP ($1200-ish); Everyone has been right, you could have gone with a solid LP (FASS, Walbro) for around $600 - it appears that you found this site a bit late - sorry!

Hard hot-starts are a strong symptom of a VP44 going south - if your CEL is on, Autozone will read them for free....P0216 is the Dying VP44 code -

Keep us posted -
