Generate codes

I see all the time you guys talking about codes. I asked my brother about this who used to be an auto tech and he said after 1998 the gov. mandated the OBD gen 2 system and you couldn't get codes anymore by using jumpers or doing the ignition trick. how are you guys getting your codes?

chrysler vehicles are nice. turn the key on and off 3 times, leaving it to ON. the odometer will display the codes starting with a p. this is to on, not crank

example. p0191

I dont think that works on Dodge Cummins pickups until model year 00 or 01.
I know my 99 would not display codes.

That is simply not true.....in fact, quite the opposite on our CTD's. Reading DTC's in the odometer display didn't start until the 00 model year on our trucks. Follow Dodgezilla04's instructions and the DTC's will be displayed if any are present.

Won't work on either of yours though.

2000 on up for the odometer reading,
pre 1998 flashed the check engine light a certain number of times.
1998 and 1999 got left out entirely.
(maybe the 98 12 valves still did the CEL flash thingy)

There are "tricks" that vary by manufacturer to read the stored codes.
I can pull codes from both my Wifey's Toyota LandCruiser and my fuel injected Harley.
