We carry Gates at our shop, and have ever only had one problem, in an older Chevy 1/2 ton, squealed badly, put a diff. brand in and the sueal went away. But other than that Gates makes good belts. Havent put one in my truck, but from other vehicle experience, they're a good choice.

Just put in a gates probably 5-6 months ago... Started squealing some lsat month and was getting pretty unbearable... Finally broke down and bought a goodyear gatorback yesterday... Was really unimpressed with the gates! probably only 5000-8000 miles on that belt...

I tried to take it back and they said because it wasn't cracked they wouldn't take it... Said screw it and bought from else where.. Hopefully the goodyear fairs better, OEM belt lasted 6 years and 100k!

Many vehicles with serpentine belts recommend 100,000 miles. My BIL's 2000 Avalon is one.

235K on orginal belt and still in use. New tensioner was required. Do carry new belt under seat and changing tool.

chirp means the belt is slipping, which to me means its a junk belt (again just my opinion) if its slipping in engine shut down that means it must be slipping when in use...alt slipping, waterpump slipping...you get the idea. I have a gater belt as well its got almost 100000miles on it in 2.5yrs, and no cracks or wear indications.

Chirp at shutdown does not indicate slippage at other times. As engine comes up on comprssion at last rev, the comprsssion pushes engine backwards. The alternator rotor has enough interia to slip belt. Grips better in normal direction than reverse rotation. A fix is alt pulley with one way clutch built in. Standard on some alternators.
