Fuel Filter Change

Well, I did my 1st attempt at the fuel filter change. I was suprised everything went so well. I even prefilled the canister and installed it without making too much of a mess! So.. I thought.. Until I went to prime the system.
I cracked the inner most test port like I was told in the instructions I found here and bumped the starter. I went out to watch for seepage around the test port. I could hear the air escaping and I thought "cool this is working well".... till it ran outa air. It seems the test port was a little too loose!
BOY! When those lift pumps are working can they throw fuel! It looked just like a fountain just soaking everything!!! The motor, the hood, the garage... Did you know the if you go and quickly turn the key off.... It doesn't stop the pump!!! That was the longest 20 seconds of my life!!! It loooked like an episode from the LUCY show! Holding my hands over the filter trying to stop the flow!!
My wife wants to know.... How long does it take till the diesel smell leaves the garage?

Hipshot - if you prefill the canister theres no real need to crack and lines or fittings. On my 01, I just prefill the filter canister, put the lid back on and bump the starter a couple of times and she fires right up (as long as the LP is good). No mess, no fuss.

You can set a fan to blow across the floor then maybe by august, it'll evaporate enough to paint
You're not alone, many here have had a diesel shower including myself.

Why would you want the diesel smell to leave the garage?

I have NEVER pre-filed the canister or cracked the port. The VP has a bypass, so air will only return to the tank. It may be a small issue, but I agree with the theory that if you pre-fill the canister you are using non-filtered fuel! May let a small amount of non-filtered fuel to get to the injection pump and injectors. Have you seen how small the holes are in the injectors? Don't think it would take much to plug one of them...
