Fuel Additives. Mine appears to worsen fuel mileage.
After reading the bosch report (at the same time that I saw the report I was just getting mine back from having the lift pump AND the injector pump replaced.) I went straight to the Cummins/Cat/Detroit diesel place and got some Lucas additive.
I had read good things about it on this web site (also it was the only one they had).
It also claimed to increase fuel economy. Which has me quite preturbed.
I've ran about6 or 8 tanks of fuel since then and always keep exact track of fuel economy.
My mileage went DOWN slightly over 1 mpg. when I started adding the Lucas additive. AND has consistently stayed there.
I'd like to change to another one but can't find a place (near burbank, CA) where they have one I've heard of.
There is one I can't remember the name of, that makes the same claim as Lucas, and also claims to keep fuel from jelling in the winter as if you were using a winter blend. That sounds a little fishy at the get go because you normally get 1 mpg less with winter blend.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY INPUT ON THIS????
Am I the only guy who's fuel economy went down because he started using an additive????
By the way, mine's a 98 1/2, 2500 quad cab slt auto,I do not tow anything but gennerally have between 600 and 1200 pounds of tools in the back. My economy is just under 14mpg on average using the lucas additive. I have about 77,000 miles on my truck.

Re:Fuel Additives. Mine appears to worsen fuel mileage.
I run "stanydine" in every tank and actually gained about 1mpg. I have heared nothing but good about this stuff and have used it faithfully for a year now. I did run out of it and ran 4 tanks without and noticed a big differance, got some more and after a tank it's back to it's SMOOOTTTHHHHH self again. I am a believer of this stuff.
STANYDINE------(stan-i-dine)
Most cummins stores have this stuff
cummins northwest or Kenworth trucking stores.
p.s. I run at 70-80mph commuting a day and get between 18.5-19.5mpg! 8)

I use both the Lucas and howes diesel fuel additive. I have not really watched to see what fuel milage i really get. I know it is pretty good though. -Anthony

Depending on how dirty your fuel system was, the cleaning of it could actually worsen your fuel economy. But as time goes on your Fuel economy should get better.
I would run the additives at least 3-4 tanks. Also make sure your using a healthy enough dose. At least the first 2 tanks. Then you can go to a maintenance dose.

I use Power Service. Averaging 1 mpg better than when I started. It's available at any truck stop, Napa Auto Parts, Schucks, Krager, etc.

If the fuel system was dirty, why would the cleaning of it worsen the fuel economy? I don't see the logic in that. I'm not disagreeing with you nor saying you're wrong - I just don't understand it.

I would get that all the built up crude/grunge has to go somewhere, so it will be going through the engine and getting burned. That could account for less fuel economy. Another thing is that you could have disloged some carbon or other deposit which is cause ineffecient spray from the injectors, which takes time to get dissolved? Would that make sense as well.
I'm not an expert just stabbing in the dark, hence the reason I said run it a couple of tanks to see if it improves. If it doesn't improve could be something else.

On my '03 I've tried different additives and never found any of them to return different fuel mileage. I did find one "premium" diesel fuel to give better mileage tho.
Puke, what shape is your fuel filter in? I've heard a clogged fuel filter can affect performance/mileage.

Re:Fuel Additives. Mine appears to worsen fuel mileage.
In answer to your questions.
My fuel filter was replaced at the dealer when the l.p. and injector pumps were replaced, just before starting the additive.
(by the way, I did run ONE complete tank with no additive after I had all the stuff replaced. It got better fuel economy than it did before they replaced the pumps and fuel filter, but then I read the bosch report and went straight to the cummins place and got the lucas stuff (only stuff they had).).
I add EXACTLY as much fuel additive as they recommend.
I'm looking for a place here in town i can find that stanydine stuff.
By the way, I don't believe the fuel system was dirty. They didn't say anything about the filter being dirty when I asked them to replace it.
My understanding is that only a clogged injector would decrease mileage, not one that is now supposedly getting cleaner since I am running lucas. Also, since the winter blend diesel theoretically gives worse mileage, I wouldn't surprize me that something else could do the same thing without trying.
What I don't understand is: WHY THE HELL THEY SAY IT INCREASES MILEAGE????? A BIT OF A LIE IN MY CASE.
I will change as soon as I can find another additive. And then we will find out if they are lying also. I think before I change, I will run one complete tank with no additive just to see if I gain 1 mpg. from taking the lucas out of my tank. And then If I'm lucky, I'll could gain another 1 mpg. by adding another one that's telling the truth.

Re:Fuel Additives. Mine appears to worsen fuel mileage.
Just a question, did you run a few tanks without the treatment thru your new lift & injector pump? Whenever we had the injector pump replaced, mileage decreased 1 or 2 mpg. Using Power Service much time later, I haven't noticed any significant amount of change in the mileage. Just a thought.
Re:Fuel Additives. Mine appears to worsen fuel mileage.
I ran one tank after changing pumps before I started adding lucas.
That one tank I actually had a clear increase of about 8% or so (as compared to before I had my lift and vp44 replaced) over my mileage before they replaced them.
Keep in mind that I was using no additive before the replacements.
At this point I have probably ran about 300 gallons with the lucas additive (just a guess). at 400, my Lucas will be gone, and I hope by then I have found some Stanydine.

My dad and I also run powerservice. I put it in every tank because I only fill up once every 3-4 weeks. He puts it in now and then because he fills up every 2 days or so. He gets great millage. It clames to stop jelling also. So far no jell for us. Its avilable all over here in PA but we usually get it from WallMart. ITs cheapest there.
Re:Fuel Additives. Mine appears to worsen fuel mileage.
Just to through my plug in. To let you know Amsoil markets some fuel additives for diesel as well.
Amsoil makes 2 products that I use. One is call Cetane Boost. Raises Cetane rating 3-7 points.
The other is Amsoil Diesel Concentrate(ADC)
All-season performance, treats up to 100 gallons. Lowers diesel fuel gel point by 20° to 30° F, depending on mix ratio. Improves the performance, fuel efficiency and longevity of diesel engines while reducing deposits, black smoke, emissions and injector wear.
