front wheel bearings???
front wheel bearings???
i think my front wheel bearings are shot, i can hear a slight ticking sound goin down the road about 30mph. jacked up front end and absolutely no play in any direction up down and side to side, could not hear any noise spinning the wheel by hand, what you all think??? how much and how hard is it to change them out??? any specialty tools needed???
thanks, Kyle

Am I to assume this is on your 99 4x4? Your up and down will check ball joints, side to side, tie rods. Wheel bearings will usually only make noise when they are loaded, up off the ground and they are perfectly silent.
In my experience it seems that the wheel bearings get noisier in turns, may even growl. Can't remember which way indicated which side, kinda put that career behind me. We had a ford for a place I used to work for. It would tick, tick in corners, straight. Did it for 50k, had ford dealer check front wheel bearings, ok. They did'nt know what the noise was, kept on driving it. Sometimes it's a stone or something. I guess check your driveshafts make sure all u-joints are tight and not causing tick, tick. I had a toyota that had dry u-joints, it ticked before it dropped the driveshaft. Actually it ticked, then vibrated violently...then spit the driveshaft, good times.
As far as changing them. 1st, pretty pricey parts, 2nd, you'll need a socket to get off the axle nut, over 1" I believe, 12 point socket for wheel bearing bolts. Then find the biggest darn sledge hammer you can find and manage to swing under your truck to beat that bearing out with. Mine was unbelievably tight and did'nt want to heat it, had to reuse it because changing ball joint.
Quite a bit of work involved and I'd want to be certain it was wheel bearings especially for the cost of them. Me, I'd drive it, but then again, I can't hear your exact noise either. I've spent 18 years working on other peoples junk professionally, just so you don't think I'm some back yard type, shadetree and such.
