Front seal leak...

The front seal is not a high tech deal, what could I have done to make it leak? The crank was new, no groove, installed it according to the service manual, pushed it over the crank guide. Use the recommended loctite on the outer shell. Have a sizeable leak, am pretty sure it is coming from the front seal, hard to tell, sometimes it leaks bad, other times not much. Any ideas???

You may have bumped the seal's lip a little too hard when you installed the cover. Sometimes its good to have some guide pins to rest the cover on while you ease the cover/seal over the crankshaft guide piece.

Just get some metric bolts about 3" long and cut the heads off. Then you have a set of guide pins.

I thought I had a front main seal leaking last winter. Looked that way. Turned out to be the front of the oil pan seal a couple of inches below. Air blew everything up on the main seal, and then backward. There's a notch on the front oil pan & seal; C.tech told me it was a weak design and leaked there sometimes.

Just a suggestion. Luck.

I just read on TDR magazine, "...and be sure the crank nose is dry since the teflon seal will leak if it or the crank sealing surface is oily." This was in an article about the KDP. I did not know that seal should be installed dry and would have a leak if I installed it because I usually oil a seal a little upon installation.
Hope this helps.

I was aware of that from the service manual. Did my best to keep it dry. I am not sure that the front seal is the leak. It may be the O ring seal between the two halfs of the vacume pump, not sure where it is coming from, it blows around down there. Does not seem to be leaking so much now, better weather will bring more decisions.
